Hmm - you still have a bunch of packages that haven't been upgraded. OK, start with run the following, as root. No more simulation. You probably should shutdown X first, although just restarting it afterwards should work just as well.

Code: Select all

aptitude install ~i~nxorg
aptitude safe-upgrade
You can post the output (Might want to use a pastebin if it's really long, although obviously not critical) On the safe upgrade if you're not sure of anything post the output and the question before saying yes. If it all looks good just let it run though.

After they complete:

Code: Select all

apt-show-versions|grep unknown
and just to see (back in simulation mode)

Code: Select all

aptitude full-upgrade -s

Bugsbunny,

The downgrade was successful! as well as the safe-upgrade! My system just detected my SAMSUNG 21.5" LED monitor. :D So happy!

On apt-show-versions | grep unknown the result is:

skype/unknown uptodate 2.1.0.81-1

On aptitude full-upgrade -s the result is:

No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed.
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 30 not upgraded.
Need to get 0 B of archives. After unpacking 0 B will be used.
Would download/install/remove packages.

What's next?

Thanks alot and I can't wait for the next move to finally put my system in "GOOD HEALTH" status. :D

P.S.

By the way, should I remove the preferences file after all this? Can I keep it while adding multimedia and skype repositories? Thanks alot!

We're done with preferences - remove those entries.
Now to see what's left. Repeat of some previous stuff:

Code: Select all

deborphan
aptitude search ~o
apt-show-versions|grep "No available version"
I'm very curious about this:
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 30 not upgraded.
What's the output of

Code: Select all

aptitude search ~U

Hmm.. on your end, do you still believe that my system can be fixed?
It's always a good idea to back up important files, specially on an office workstation where they might be needed whilst you are delving into the intricacies of aptitude and xorg etc! I'd just like to reiterate that Stable is the best choice for running your "critical apps" but since you don't seem averse to under-the-hood stuff, maybe better to use another machine?
When, with Bugsbunny's help you have restored the system to pristine purity, you may like to try and install the proprietary nvidia driver using module-assistant as detailed in the debian wiki here. Later, just use nvidia-xconfig to make an /etc/X11/xorg.conf then you can edit it to enable compiz as explained here and everything should work perfectly.
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

No simulation, as root:

Code: Select all

deborphan|xargs aptitude purge
Simulate this and post the output

Code: Select all

aptitude -s purge gcc-4.2-base libcap1 libdns45 libisc45 libisccc40 libisccfg40 libvolume-id0 xarchive ~n"2.6.26-2-686"
I assume you compiled alsa-modules-2.6.32-5-686 (why?)

Note: Nvidia drivers, I recommend you install them the way I outlined. xorg.conf can (and should) be minimal, until/unless you have actual problems. The only thing you need to start is the driver section as I indicated. Compiz will work fine, some (maybe most?) of the stuff in the wiki is outdated. The nvidia drivers in squeeze will autodetect all the settings you need.

I got this message when I run deborphan | xargs aptitude purge:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
kdebase-workspace-kgreet-plugins{p} libepc-1.0-2{p} libgdata-common{p}
libisccfg40{p} libkworkspace4{p} libqtscript4-core{p}
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 6 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0 B of archives. After unpacking 3,531 kB will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n/?] Abort.
xargs: aptitude: exited with status 255; aborting

Why the error? Thanks.

To kedaha,

I agree with you that I should I start to do some back ups and I do have another computer as backup while I explore the Debian Universe. :) By the way, I am really enjoying the learning especially with Bugsbunny guidance.

I'm not sure. If I haad to guess that's an xargs error rather than an aptitude error, possibly caused by aptitude's return code upon an abort.
`
Why did you abort anyways?

@bugsbunny I assumed that /etc/X11/xorg.conf is necessary because removing it enables the default driver. I found that the above minimal file did not work in a recent installation of Squeeze but the /etc/X11/xorg.conf resulting from nvidia-xconfig did.

Sadly, it automatically aborted itself. I did not do an abort. It was automatic. Hmm.. Is the abort due to my running the command on X-windows? I did not stopped x-windows when I did it. Is my analysis correct?

Anyway, I just did the old fashion way by doing an aptitude purge on the individual packages as listed in deborphan. As of the present, when I run deborphan there are no more packages shown.

I did not compile the alsa-modules. I think I got it from unstable or lenny. I used it for my skype and audio. Any suggestion on how to handle it.

On the next command: aptitude -s purge gcc-4.2-base libcap1 libdns45 libisc45 libisccc40 libisccfg40 libvolume-id0 xarchive ~n"2.6.26-2-686" the result was:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
arj{u} gcc-4.2-base{p} libcap1{p} libdns45{p} libisc45{p} libisccc40{p}
libisccfg40{p} librpmbuild1{u} libvolume-id0{p}
linux-image-2.6.26-2-686{p} p7zip{u} rpm{u} xarchive{p}
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 13 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0 B of archives. After unpacking 66.2 MB will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n/?] Y
Would download/install/remove packages.

I think the problem is just with xarg.

Thanks and I hope we can solve this last few blockades before the nvidia install. Thanks again.

It is necessary, as you say, since otherwise the default driver is used. In most cases the minimum config above will work. In some it won't, which is why I said until/unless. But starting from the minimum won't hurt. If the minimum doesn't work then you can either look at the logs and try to figure out what you need, or you can try running xconfig. Back when xorg.conf was necessary and had a lot of entries xconfig was needed much more often, but the autodetect stuff tends to work in the majority of cases nowadays.

Run the following for real

Code: Select all

aptitude purge gcc-4.2-base libcap1 libdns45 libisc45 libisccc40 libisccfg40 libvolume-id0 xarchive ~n"2.6.26-2-686" xarchiver+
Don't worry about alsa-modules. Just out of curiosity run:

Code: Select all

deborphan alsa-modules-2.6.32-5-686
That should pretty much do it. You can run

Code: Select all

aptitude search ~o
, just to verify what's left (should be not much, although there will be some.

You can also try installing the nvidia-drivers again.

Bugsbunny,

I did the purge and it was successful. Thanks.

When I run the deborphan on alsa-modules it resulted:

alsa-modules-2.6.32-5-686

Is the alsa modules a useless package if it showed up in deborphan? Does it mean that it is to be purged?

For the aptitude search ~o the result is:

i alsa-modules-2.6.32-5-686 - ALSA modules for kernel 2.6.32-5-686
i debian-backports-keyring - GnuPG archive key of the backports.org rep
i libdvdcss2-dev - Simple foundation for reading DVDs - devel
i libglobalmenu-gnome - GTK+ Module for Global Menu
i libgnomenu0-2 - Library for Global Menu
i netbeans-ide - IDE for Java Development and More, version
i A netbeans-platform - IDE for Java Development and More, version
i pbuilder-satisfydepends-dummy - Dummy package to satisfy dependencies with

By the way, if you think that the above packages are useless then I am willing to purge them. Just say the GO signal. Don't worry about netbeans cuz I plan to shift to eclipse anyway cuz that is what is recommended by my work. :)

Thanks alot! and the next post is NVIDIA installation.

I think that purging alsa-modules should be OK, but I'm not sure. I'd be happier if I knew how it got there. All the required alsa modules should be built into the kernel. It's not really hurting anything.

If you want to delete it and see if everything works without it that's fine. If push comes to shove we can rebuild it using module-assistant and the alsa-source package.

the backports keyring - if you plan on adding squeeze backports to your repos you might as well do it now, that should clear this one up. If you're not going to then you can delete it.

libdvdcss2-dev
netbeans-ide
netbeans-platform
pbuilder-satisfydepends-dummy

Those 4 can be deleted, given what you said about netbeans.

libglobalmenu-gnome
libgnomenu0-2

Those 2 I leave up to you. You installed them, you can decide if you want to keep them. The purge should have also installed xarchiver, which replaces xarchive.

Bugsbunny,

The nvidia debian way installation worked! I am now running it in my system and it is so cool!

Thanks alot for your help especially your guidance in purging my system. More power to you! Thanks again. :)

On the packages, I purged everything except the backport keyring cuz I added the backports in my repository and alsa-modules cuz like you I don't really know how it got there. Is there a way to know if the kernel had it already and this one is superflous? I love to remove all the unnecessary stuff. I hate clutter. hehee.. Thanks again for the splendid help!

By the way, I have to install nvidia-xconfig as suggested by Kedaha cuz the minimum installation did not work. To Kedaha, I send my thanks as well cuz your added point clinched the installation.

Once again, thanks to all and Debian rocks!
