apt-get install -t experimental gnome3-session

It's not nearly as polished as the demo from the live cd's and not really worth it until the rough edges are polished a little more. I could not access any sort of configuration menus, the background couldn't be changed from that plain blue horror, the icons were all messed up, etc. Lots of things need to be ironed out before it can be fun to use. I have to say though, I like the way the activities button works. This WILL be a great desktop once it is a little more debugged.
Try running this command: aptitude install gnome-control-center=1:2.91.93-1 gnome-control-center-data=1:2.91.93-1 gnome-themes-standard=2.91.93-1 . It should update the gnome control center to the latest version available and fix the icons.

Anyone find that System Settings and My Account don't open any app when clicked?

I also that there are options to the left of my login name on the top right of the screen. However there are no icons I can see there and I find this out quite by mistake.

I have the same problem. Better to wait for a experimental version.

About battery status:

# apt-get install gnome-power-manage

I already have gnome-power-manager but it doesn't show me battery status. When I run aspi I get following message

Code: Select all

No support for device type: power_supply

i wonder if it is worthwhile turning this into a general gnome3 experimental thread

As a separate issue has anyone got the accounts manager working. When I launch it, using the My Account link in the shell menu, I get a Failed to contact the accounts service error?

I still just compile it using JHbuild. This allows me to have a bit of the gnome3 interface and my gnome 2 apps. I will probably wait for it to hit testing.

Do you compile only the shell or the entire GNOME 3?

It pulls in a lot of Gnome 3, but it runs on top of your existing Gnome 2 without changing anything.

Can I install gnome-3-stable? (http://www.gnome.org/)
The terminal says that gnome3-session can not be found. :?:

http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell#Building is only about gnome-shell. May "gnome-3" be installed on Debian?
I'm sorry, English is not my native language. Maybe my question is not understandable.

As gnome-shell is the major part of gnome3, I figured that is the bit everyone is really interested in. Hence the link.

I tried to compile it myself, but the source code is HUGE. I haven't that much bandwidth to spare.

Will there be no official compiled version of GNOME for Debian?

Gnome3 depends on xulrunner 1.9.2 but squeeze only has version 1.9.1. I'd expect it to hit experimental first, then in time, testing, but I doubt it will get to stable any time soon, if at all.

Hang in there.

It will not appear in Squeeze. Squeeze is stable and will only get bugfixes and security update.

Or you would have to consider gnome 2.xx a bug ;)

I was thinking about if I can upload any package of gnome3 to debian experimental... or only can upload it the gnome team?

If I can upload it.. how I can do it? I have compiled gnome-shell with jhbuild tool and has around 100 packages. Do I need to package and upload it?

I would like to contribute
