No Internet on new install [SOLVED]

#1 Post by triplemaya »

Hi. New installation of Squeeze. No Internet. I have googled and browsed but all the responses seem highly complex, involving editing files. But elsewhere it says "In effect, the goal of NetworkManager is to make networking Just Work."

What should I do next?

I don't really understand these commands, but they always seem to be asked for

Code: Select all

Does look like you have an ip address from your router.

Did you try putting for example 74.125.91.105 or in a browser ?
If that works, it is a DNS problem and the network works...

Alex.

The problem may not come from the computer or the operating system itself. Are you connected to the internet directly or is there any kind of server, firewall, etc? Sometimes connection failures are due to these when not well configured.

Just mentioning that because I can hardly believe that Squeeze would have any kind of software problems with networking. In most cases these problems come from hardware or internet connection issues :)

Hi. Not well at present, witness the fact that I am posting on this forum from the problem computer. Clearly I have Internet connection!! Durr. What I do not have is updates.

I discovered I did not have updates I went to the icon on the taskbar and it says under Wired Network device not managed. Then I posted on this forum for help.

When I go to updates in Update Manager it cannot connect. The first time I did it I could access the error messages, but now each time I do it I just get an error message that says 'an internal error has occured and the operation has been aborted' and when I click ok the update manager closes. When I do apt-get update it just hangs.

The reason it says "Wired Network device is not managed" is explained in http://wiki.debian.org/NetworkManager
No updates? Did you install perhaps without a connection to the net so apt didn't get configured?
Check output for:

Code: Select all

$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

Hi. Thanks.
The reason it says "Wired Network device is not managed" is explained in http://wiki.debian.org/NetworkManager
I know it sounds really pathetic, but I have read this page several times, and I don't get it.
No updates? Did you install perhaps without a connection to the net so apt didn't get configured?
When I was installing debian, the window was bigger than the screen (a weird glitch, as the screen is pretty big - 1920 x 1200 -- shades of linux past when the installer simply could not do the display properly) so I could not see the bottom of the window. I kept just hitting enter when I thought I was done with each screen, but I hardly felt properly in touch with what I was doing!
Check output for: cat /etc/apt/sources.list
cat /etc/apt/sources.list

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0 _Squeeze_ - Official Snapshot i386 LIVE/INSTALL Binary 20110206-07:10]/ squeeze main

You need to update your sources.list - something like

Code: Select all

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free

As hotkee says, you need to edit your sources list; this is why you're not getting any updates.
Using the root terminal, enter the command nano and edit the file to look like exactly as below or modify them to use a mirror if you wish( just cut & paste them):

Code: Select all

# nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Code: Select all

#

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0 _Squeeze_ - Official Snapshot i386 LIVE/INSTALL Binary 20110206-07:10]/ squeeze main[/quote]

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main

deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main

# squeeze-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://ftp.uss.debian.org/debian/ squeeze-updates main
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze-updates main
Use control+O (the letter, not the zero + then Enter to save followed by Control+X to exit the nano,
Now do

Code: Select all

# aptitude update
Now, if you want Network manager to manage your connection, edit the other file the same way:
# nano /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

It should look like this:

Code: Select all

[main]
plugins=ifupdown,keyfile

[ifupdown]
managed=true
Exit nano as before.
It's supposed to work after restart or after you reboot:

Code: Select all

# /etc/init.d/network-manager restart
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

Update

I started getting some really weird things happening. I could not open any nautilus windows. Then when I went to shut down there was some strange error. So I switched off and turned it back on again. Still no updates. So I decided to do a fresh install.

So, I'm going through the screens, and all I see is the options, there are no buttons saying OK, back, cancel, or anything, but each time I hit enter I go to a new screen. (I can't resize the window, either by grabbing the corners or by the menu. So, at each step I get the choice of options, but ok etc is not visible, I am just presuming its all there, at the bottom of the window, out of sight.)

Then at one point the message comes up 'the network connection has been disconnected'

Then I select ………. eth0

And then it says 'your connection has been established eth0

then it asks for my domain name, but this pc does not have a domain name. so I just hit enter and on we go.

Then, further along, it gives me a huge range of options, including 'detect network hardware'. So I select this. and it gets busy. and then i get the message ''the network connection has been disconnected' again.

I'm not sure that's gone well!

So then I click 'finish the installation'. Ubuntu is much much simpler than all this!! (I'm trying to migrate from ubuntu, but maybe I am just not clever enough for debian!)

So, here I am with a fresh install. Internet is working fine, but no updates. I fire up the update manager, which thinks for a while, and then gives me the error message 'an internal error has occurred and the operation has been aborted' and below that 'could not download packages information.'

So I'm no further forward.

Thanks kedaha. I followed your instructions to the letter and it all worked like a charm.

Thank you very much.

Problem solved.

One last thing. I don't understand why all this happened. Did I mess up the install, or is this just something I have to be ready to do when I do a debian install?

but the update manager looks as if it is going to work. it has a great big list of things to install, which before it did not.

You could go into System->Administration->Software Sources

and choose a different download server and then retry.

where are you in the world?

Hi hotkey. I just tried it again and it just worked!?

I'm in the uk.

I think everything is sorted now.

So I just have the one question remaining, why did all this happen? Obviously this is not part of a standard install. Is there something I should have done different in the install? Or was I just unlucky?

There is seldom any need to do a fresh install: If, after reading information about Debian you need further clarification, then post on the forums about issues such as setting a correct screen resolution prior to a GUI installation and network configuration. With Debian, one has to take a little more time; it doesn't necessarily auto-configure which gives users much greater control over their computers.
If you wish to change your software sources from the USA server to the UK server, rather than edit your sources list file, just open Synaptic, click Settings, Repositories then Debian Software then click on the little arrows beside Download from: Server for United States and change it to Server for United kingdom.
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

P.S. By the way, when your post includes chunks of code from the terminal, or if you edit it, please just use the mouse to select the text and then click on the fifth tab along, the code tab above the window so that the post occupies lest space and can be scrolled.

Hi. Thanks for that kedaha. I'll try that next time. Still having major problems though.

Half way through the updates finally running ok, there was some kind of serious disk error. Starting again did not help. So, once more, with feeling. A reinstall. That all went smoothly enough, I thought. But when I went to boot for the first time, I got these errors:

Code: Select all

can't access job control tty turned off

mounting /sys on /root/sys no such file or directory

target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init
I turned the computer off and started again, but got the same error. So. Once again, another install. I imagine I must have missed a step in the install. But I don't at all understand what I did wrong. I thought I did everything the same as last time. When it finishes, and I get a huge list of things I can do, what do I *have* to do?

Hi. Thanks everyone.

Code edited as requested.

I think what I did wrong last time was put in a domain name when it asked for it. I did not do that before, and I thought perhaps that was where I was going wrong. But I think that messed it up. A bit of instruction on that screen about why and when you would want to put in a domain name might be a good idea.

So. I did one more reinstall, and it all works ok, but only after I put in all the edits that kedaha told me to do. I did try setting the domain server to the uk server, but that made no difference at all. only when I edited the files as instructed do I get connected to the net for updates.

I guess all's well that ends well, but I am mightily puzzled about why the standard install requires that I edit these files when I have finished. Clearly this is not for the naive user! I don't think I would have got through this if I had not had a few years of training on ubuntu so I knew how to do commands and so on.

Well, I spoke too soon again. I am not getting all of the right connections. I have tried Main Server, US Server and UK Server, but all give errors.

Code: Select all

W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.gb.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/updates/Release.gpg Could not resolve 'ftp.gb.debian.org'

W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.uss.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze-updates/Release.gpg Could not resolve 'ftp.uss.debian.org'

W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.uss.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze-updates/main/i18n/Translation-en.bz2 Could not resolve 'ftp.uss.debian.org'

W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.uss.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze-updates/main/i18n/Translation-en_GB.bz2 Could not resolve 'ftp.uss.debian.org'

W: Failed to fetch http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze-updates/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found

W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
This was all working perfectly before, on one of the previous installs, so I have absolutely no idea what is going wrong.

I had the same problem, it was my dns, this is what I get adviced:

1.- edit your file /etc/resolv.conf, you should see something like:

Code: Select all

domain some.crap
search some.crap
nameserver nicenumbers
2.- comment everything:

Code: Select all

# domain some.crap
# search some.crap
# nameserver nicenumbers
3.- Go to free dns server and pick one, I use 8.8.8.8 :)

4.- Use it on your /etc/resolv.conf, you may go sudo on this:

Code: Select all

# domain some.crap
# search some.crap
# nameserver nicenumbers
nameserver 8.8.8.8
5.- save on try again aptitude update

6.- If that worked, then...

7.- sudo chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf, to avoid external programs edit the file.

8.- hope it helps like it helped me.
