[Wheezy] startx kills mouse and keyboard

#1 Post by hintum »

I rebooted my system about a few days ago to find that whenever X was started, my mouse and keyboard would not function. I am unable to even switch to another tty when this occurs, however alt+sysrq+r will allow me to switch ttys again.

You have a real new version, when and how did you upgrade?

I had the same trouble when I tried using xorg.conf something about allowemptyinput and autoconfig options. Eventually I realized I didn't need xorg.conf anyway, I have a compatible card and only use one monitor. Try a web search for allowemptyinput and you'll probably find all kinds of hits on it, and different solutions, maybe the upgrade killed it?

oh yeh, do you have hal installed I think that caused me a problem too.

The xorg is just from the wheezy repos, had it since april and it has had no problems.
I have already tried using ServerFlags in xorg.conf to disable allow empty input, as well as no xorg.conf, neither of which helped.
I also do have HAL installed

Since the HAL project has stopped development and deprecated itself, X.Org is planning to move off HAL in the future. Support for udev instead of HAL is available in X Servers 1.8 and later and enabled by default, pending platform availability.

Old-style xorg.conf configuration is still available.
http://www.x.org/wiki/XorgHAL

I took that to mean I should not use hal, or the "Old-style" xorg.conf unless necessary.

Good to know, but removing HAL has also had no effect on the problem.

any stray xorg.conf files around? the thing searches all over for them, I don't know why it looks in so many places. other than that, maybe it's a problem with the upgrade but you have rebooted more than once since then?

what else got upgraded lately? I heard there was a udev causing problems I think v1.67 , someone else will know, or search the forum here.

Zob

Any joy in resolving this issue? I too have come across this using wheezy, and have no xorg.conf in my set up. This was a new Squeeze install upgraded to wheezy, and I have used two different types of keyboards (PS/2 and USB) and two types of mouse (again, PS/2 and USB).

Once the boot up sequence gets to the login screen, no input devices work at all. Moreover, so far I haven't been able to find anyone who has resolved this issue either.

I wonder if this has anything to do with Grub2 having recently been updated?

Please let me/ us know how you get on.

FWIW, the fix for me was to downgraded udev_170-1 and libudev0_170-1 to udev_167-3 and libudev0_167-3

Then when rebooting, this seemed to resolve the issue.

The report on this issue is here in detail http://aptosid.com/index.php?name=PNphp ... 93&start=0

Probably the new update to udev cleaned out the old rules and the maintainer forgot to mv / symlink the rules files "repo" directory to the the directory udev looks in for rules... making X find absolutely nothing to work with.

The relevant dirs are /etc/udev/rules.d and /lib/udev/rules.d

I have been struck by this problem as well now, and I have not found a solution yet.

IMHO this error is something else than the udev + /run bug. I see a lot of people complaining about kbd+mouse not working at boot time but I honestly believe some users are confusing the starting of X with the boot process.

If this were a udev + /run problem, the kbd would not work in console mode either, would it?

The bug as described in this thread is exactly the problem I have encountered: as long as I don't start X, the keyboard works perfectly. As soon as I start KDM, keyboard is gone and mouse doesn't work. When I log in thru SSH and stop KDM, keyboard functionality does not return.

Anyone who can comment on this?

I found a workaround by creating /etc/X11/xorg.conf with this contents:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerFlags"
   Option "AutoAddDevices" "false "
EndSection

I know this is silly, but would deleting the files in these directories have the same effect?

I have the same problem listed at,

for me the keyboard and mouse still work(well, i can't say for mouse) but if i kill x(log in on the console) then the keyboard works, however, as soon as i start x again the keyboard/mouse stop responding. HOWEVER, the fix i've found, which is ridiculous, but works is to just unplug and plug back in the keyboard/mouse.

however, i found http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... ng-881873/ and some one said they changed /run directory and that worked for them. I had an issue where Chromium was getting into an infinite loop and it had to do with a symlink in /run. So, i think my issue lays there, i'll try it and post back.
