Newest upgrade of Debian testing breaks Nvidia & Xorg

#1 Post by shmerl »

I just updated my Debian testing as usual (apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade), and it totally screwed up Nvidia drivers. I had to revert to integrated graphic card to start Xorg.
After that, I noticed that libgl1-nvidia-glx is missing, and when I tried to install it back, it produces the following:

Code: Select all

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libgl1-nvidia-glx : Depends: libgl1-nvidia-alternatives but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages
Any ideas what's going on with it?

This is why it's a good idea to install apt-listbugs, and to use SMXI to upgrade.

I installed apt-listbugs. Does one need to enable it somehow, or it'll be configured to work after installation?

So for the problem above, now the only way is to wait till it'll be fixed?

once you install apt-listbugs, it should run each time you d.u.

anyway, someone at mint forum had it and restore nVidia,

will this get fixed as i'm still seeing various X-related things trying to be updated if i use upgrade or dist-upgrade?

i assume the nvidia drivers need repackaging or something?

how do i get the updates for other stuff like synaptic, iptables, mysql etc. without breaking the X packages?

Um, I just rebooted and chose the previous kernel in GRUB.

I'll just wait for a fix to come in.

The only problems I have ever had in Wheezy have involved Nvidia. I wish that Nouveau would work for me,

nouveau works but its slow as hell. i ended up manually picking packages to be updated in synaptic and unticking anything X-related. i noticed there was some more gnome3 stuff coming too, which i skipped.

And this is why doing dist-upgrade for testing is not a good idea. Accepting everything indiscriminately is a worse idea. My normal procedure is (I have aliases for almost all of this. The -DV is built into my config files)

Code: Select all

aptitude update
aptitude search ~U -F"%c%M %p# %15v# %15V# %d"
Look over the updates

Code: Select all

aptitude -DV safe-upgrade
If there's still updates that didn't take (there usually aren't) then I run the search again, showing me what updates remain. I'll then apply some detective work and either leave them alone, or (usually) pull some stuff from unstable to get them to apply correctly. To find out what's going on you can start with:

Code: Select all

aptitude -sDV full-upgrade
In any case install the nvidia drivers from unstable and everything should be fine. They were problematic the other day, but everything seems to be working correctly now.

Code: Select all

aptitude install -r ~invidia -t unstable

In the workaround Lewdsquirrel suggested (in the linux mint forums from your link) he says that the removed packages will be able again to be reinstalled if these packages will be installed from the cache

libgl1-mesa-glx_7.10.2-3_i386.deb
libglu1-mesa_7.10.2-3_i386.deb
mesa-common-dev_7.10.2-3_i386.deb
xserver-common_2%3a1.10.2-1+wheezy1_all.deb
xserver-xorg-core_2%3a1.10.2-1+wheezy1_i386.deb
libgl1-mesa-dri_7.10.2-3_i386.deb
libgl1-mesa-dev_7.10.2-3_i386.deb

unfortunately I have my cache recently cleaned, so I cannot find them. Is that possible to find these OLD VERSIONS of the above packages in the package maintainers site?

I'm trying to find them here http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=search but I cannot see any way to find OLD versions.

Is there anybody can help?

Thank you.

Hi Bugs,

I am intrigued by this command - aptitude search ~U -F"%c%M %p# %15v# %15V# %d"

what is it actually doing?

i see packages which i haven't held back which are listed. is it a case that a package may have been installed as a dependency but the package that requires it doesn't need the package updated?

edit - oh it seems in the short while (probably in the region of 2 hours at most) since my last full-upgrade there were new packages available
Desktop: A320M-A PRO MAX, AMD Ryzen 5 3600, GALAX GeForce RTX™ 2060 Super EX (1-Click OC) - Sid, Win10, Arch Linux, Gentoo, Solus
Laptop: hp 250 G8 i3 11th Gen - Sid
Kodi: AMD Athlon 5150 APU w/Radeon HD 8400 - Sid

It's just displaying any packages that are upgradable (that's the ~U). the rest of the command is simply formatting the output to give me some info. I should probably drop the %c, since any package that's going to be listed will definitely already be installed :) (although it's could conceivably be a C, H or B I suppose))

Anyhow the -F is format, and is followed by the format string (in quotes)
%c A single-character flag summarizing the current state of the package

Code: Select all

i	-	the package is installed and all its dependencies are satisfied.
c	-	the package was removed, but its configuration files are still present.
p	-	the package and all its configuration files were removed, or the package was never installed.
v	-	the package is virtual.
B	-	the package has broken dependencies.
u	-	the package has been unpacked but not configured.
C	-	half-configured: the package's configuration was interrupted.
H	-	half-installed: the package's installation was interrupted.
%M If the package is automatically installed, outputs “A”; otherwise, outputs nothing.
%p package name
%v currently installed version
%V version that will be installed
%d description

the # and 15 are field modifiers that effect the displayed width and are there so I don't get the field cutoff. See the aptitude manual for more details.

I fixed it. I found OLD verdion of .deb packages here http://mirror.nus.edu.sg/Debian/pool/main/

If there is someone still having problem please answer.

tip: additionally to the packages mentioned above:
libgl1-mesa-glx_7.10.2-3_i386.deb
libglu1-mesa_7.10.2-3_i386.deb
mesa-common-dev_7.10.2-3_i386.deb
xserver-common_1.10.2-1+wheezy1_all.deb
xserver-xorg-core_1.10.2-1+wheezy1_i386.deb
libgl1-mesa-dri_7.10.2-3_i386.deb
libgl1-mesa-dev_7.10.2-3_i386.deb

there was also
xserver-xephyr_1.10.2-1+wheezy1_amd64.deb

needed. Do not forget it. Good luck.

For future reference, any package that ever was (or is) in Debian can be obtained at snapshot.debian.org

Read the directions at the site to find out how to grab an archive for any given date and set your sources.list

Thanks, that workaround from the mint forum worked, together with the xephyr tip, which I had to do it as follows:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i xserver-xephyr_2%3a1.10.2-1+wheezy1_amd64.deb
And after rerunning nvidia-xconfig X was able to start at last.

Both nvidia and fglrx/ati are broken in testing.

Easiest way to fix is using smxi/sgfxi and install the driver from Nvidia, the normal Debian way is broken, unless you want to install the driver from sid.

For more info see:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=630710

BTW the ati/fglrx bug is #630592

I actually tried to install the driver from the nvidia site, but their installer was halting with a SIGTERM right after accepting the license.

Try to learn and use smxi/sgfxi to install and manage nVidia driver.
works for Debian and all Debian based distros I tried.

remove nvidia-installer-cleanup, then it should go.

I've got fglrx & narrowly avoided uninstalling it from my wheezy system. It wanted to install a new xserver-xorg-core & libgl1-mesa dri&glx. I'm careful now - I used to do indiscriminate updates, but with testing that's not a good idea. Most of the time you're OK - then a kernel or X-related update comes along & boom! I think 11.6 is in unstable, I assume that's what's needed in wheezy

In case it helps anyone, I had the exact same problem (on amd64) and instead of reverting the mesa driver, I fixed it installing the newer nvidia drivers from unstable:

1. Added 'unstable' to /etc/apt/sources.list
2. Update & install from unstable

Code: Select all

# apt-get update
# apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms/unstable nvidia-glx/unstable
3. Remove 'unstable' from /etc/apt/sources.list

Reboot and you're done!
