X Won't Start Due To Nvidia Drivers

#1 Post by Jalfor »

Well, I tried following the instructions for installing a Nvidia Driver for my graphics card and although no error message came up during the installation, Debian won't start up now and frankly, I don't have a clue what to do. It said to look at Xorg.0.log for more info so I'll post it here.

What is your video card? Post what this command shows please:

Code: Select all

$ lspci | grep VGA
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

The command you asked me to type didn't do anything, it just put me on a new line as if I had just pressed enter. (atm I am not on debian because it is kind of stuffed hence this thread)

As for my graphics card though, it is 2xNvidia GTX 570 (new build :D) and Nvidia does have the driver available for Linux, I checked, and I have the .run file, though it seemed like it was going to be far less painful to do it the more automated way.

Hi there :)

I have the same problem with driver version 290.03 and 290.06.

I will post my nvidia-bug-report log in a minute.

EDIT:
Here it is the log

http://microcris.no.sapo.pt/coisas/nvid ... log.tar.7z

The configuration stored in xorg.conf works well with the 280.13-1 driver.
After finish the 290.0x driver installation I run the nvidia-xconfig and there is no error but after restart gdm3 there is no internal display.
If I connect an external display the gnome-shell shows up. I run the nvidia-settings and I can see that the driver cannot find the internal display.

VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G73 [GeForce Go 7700] (rev a1)
Linux G1 3.1.0-1-amd64
Gnome Version 3.0.2

I think I I've tried everything I could try.
I followed the article http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers
I tried to force the monitor detection
I tried to bypass the monitor data reading by providing the edid to Xserver
and... nothing

EDIT:

How many Xorg.x.log files is supposed to have in /var/log?
the 290.0x creates more than 500 Xorg.x.log flies in /var/log.

Hi, I had a similar problem in Wheezy due to the updates to X. I had to install the newest drivers from the Nvidia website.
Hope this helps.

Hi there!

I tried the oficial driver from nvidia site and the result is the same.
It is a beta version and is normal that something is wrong but I see that there isn't many people with this problem.

here it is the log http://microcris.no.sapo.pt/coisas/nvid ... og.tar.bz2

I don't have the GTX 570 nVidia graphics card in question so I am unable to test whether my suggestion works or not: Rather than download and then try to install the proprietary driver from the nVidia site, I suggest installing the packages from Debian's own sid repository. But first purge all nvidia files from previous failed attempts:

Code: Select all

# aptitude purge ~nnvidia
Now edit your sources.list:

Code: Select all

# nano /etc/apt/sources.list
Cut and paste the following (you may wish to use a different mirror):

Code: Select all

#unstable #
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free
Save file with Control+O (the letter) and Control+X to quit
Edit you 'preferences' file so that you can install certain packages from sid without pulling in a heap of unwanted unstable packages:

Code: Select all

# nano /etc/apt/apt.conf
Cut and paste this line to this empty file:

Code: Select all

APT::Default-Release "wheezy";
Save the file with Control+O (the letter) and Control+X to quit, then update your sources:

Code: Select all

# aptitude update
Then try:

Code: Select all

# aptitude install -t unstable nvidia-glx nvidia-settings nvidia-xconfig && nvidia-xconfig
But remember to create a rudimentary /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Code: Select all

# nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
with the following content:

Code: Select all

Section "Screen"
        Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"
EndSection

Section "Module"
        Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Video Card"
        Driver "nvidia"
EndSection
Save & exit as before.
Now reboot and maybe it'll work!
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

Hi there kedaha!

Usually I only use the Debian way to install the nvidia driver.
When there is a newer version in experimental repository I use that version. Right now the 290.06 version driver is on experimental and is that one that I cannot put in to work.
In unstable repository (that is my main repository) there is the 280.13 version driver and that one works well.

Anyway, I tried again but this time with "Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"" (I don't had this one in xorg.xconf) and there is nothing new.

I think the problem is in the digital port.
The 280.13 driver uses DFP-0 port to connect the internal display
The 290.06 driver says that there is no DFP-0 port available. There is only DFP-1, CRT and TV ports.

Hi all,
I've exactly the same problem.
My system is:
-Laptop: Acer Aspire 9423
-Graphic card: nVidia Ge Force Go 7300
-Operating system: Debian Wheezy/Sid x86_64
-Kernel: 3.1.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP
-DE: Gnome3 / Gnome-shell

I've tried the "nouveau" driver with "mesa-dri-drivers-experimental", but it is impossible to use (too slow).
Since the nvidia drivers 290.x do not work on this system, due to the "no screen found problem", is there an other nVidia driver which allows to use gnome-shell (not in fallback mode) on my laptop?
Anyway in the "nv News Fourm" an nvidia corporation member mentioned that: "This bug has already been fixed in our development branch. The next driver release should include the fix; sorry for the inconvenience.", I hope they'll release a new beta driver soon.
Thanks.

P.S: sorry for my english.

Why are you using the trunk kernel? I'd replace that first.
I wish for a conjugal visit and world peace. (Don't want to seem selfish.)

It is actually the last kernel in the repository (testing).
Do you think that change the kernel will positively affect the video performance or solve the video problem?

Hey, do i understand correctly, that new xorg doesn't use xorg.conf in /etc/X11/ anymore, but it is still needed for nvidia drivers?
I found the xorg.conf from my old Ubuntu installation. Are these contents ok?:

Code: Select all

Section "Screen"
	Identifier	"Default Screen"
	DefaultDepth	24
EndSection

Section "Module"
	Load	"glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Default Device"
	Driver	"nvidia"
	Option	"NoLogo"	"True"
EndSection
