ulteo is debian based? haha that's funny

I found another deb based one a couple of hours ago, http://www.tapioneer.com/ these guys give you a copy of crossover with it

Well, I roll my eyes at these new distros, but I hope they do alright for themselves, and anything that increases linux usage is OK by me (:

That's a quite interesting distro... I mean, not every distro gives you a copy of CrossOver (but CrossOver sucks, Cedega is better at emulating programs than CrossOver [sounds ridiculous])

crossover and cedega are aimed at different things though, I doubt you could wine a lot of the programs in cedega, that you can with crossover, and probably vice versa

Ulteo - taste a bit of freedom
Debian - taste all the freedom you want
(new slogan) :)

I am glad to see Gaël Duval back in action. Still have no idea about the 'taste a bit of freedom" thing though...

Actually, they don't... it's just a trail:
Both the Basic and OEM versions of our software come with a trial of CrossOver Office from CodeWeavers.

Here is an article at Linux.com.
The goal of Ulteo, Duval explains, is "to address these issues by shifting as much system administration as possible from the users' hands to computer specialists."
Oh horror!! He is taking the MS route: "We know better than you how your system should be." Will be interesting to see if he can pull it off though. It will pose som interesting new security problems I would think...

It's not a bad a idea, I do the same thing for neighbours in my residential area

some people don't really have the time or the capability of learning how to manage a system, so I don't see a problem handing off the management to someone else, be they a friend/neighbour or a company, it's really all about trust

Of course you can never be 100% sure you're 'safe', but you have to weigh that against what you're willing to do in order to become 100% safe

Yes, an there lies the heart of the problem. What makes Windows so vulnerable is not just the design of the OS, but just as much the general "Windows way". The user is not in any significant way encouraged to look into anything regarding managing their system. Every single apliance you buy today comes with instructions of how to use it and maintain it... the Windows OS does not. MS has over the years preached ease of use to the degree that people really believe you don't have to know anything in order to use your computer, so they simply refuse to learn anything. On the other hand, the same people don't mind spending a couple of hours learning how to use their new washing machine or DVD player.

Malware vendors know this. They know that the average Windows user is 'stupid' because no one tells them anything. Windows says 'trust me' and people transfer this trust to everything Windows related... even third party software.

If you hide behind a formidable EULA you're safe because nobody will read it anyway. So when the user installs a smiles pack for MSN Messenger they have no reason to suspect something fishy is going on in the backround. It's a 'windows program' after all.

Which is why it's good to have someone like me do the installing for you (:

I actually see a whole untapped business for this, it's limited to corporate support today, end users have to sit and talk to dolts over phone support

I don't do it for profit, I do it because it's the neighbourly (and the right) thing to do

If there are people with potential or with interest I encourage them to learn for themselves, but there are _tons_ of people without a learning potential

Yeah, I'd like to see how he does it, at least from a learning perspective that can be applied to other systems.

I also help out friends and family with their systems, it's the usual remove most everything that comes pre-installed on today's systems. Then install Firefox, Thunderbird and AVG for virus protection, all free solutions. Train them a bit on the perils of the net and surprisingly they have very little incidents to report.

One of the niceties of Unix, the big selling point of those Mac commercials, like Steve Jobs invented Unix :)
