[Solved]Why radeon driver is not loaded? (AMD HD6000 Series)

#1 Post by Jesse2004 »

My thinkpad has AMD HD 6480G(from the APU A4-3300M) and HD 6470M dual graphics. I'm using Squeeze and I don't use the proprietary fglrx.

From Xorg.0.log, it seems that fbdev is being used instead of radeon:

Code: Select all

[    32.913] (==) Matched ati as autoconfigured driver 0
[    32.913] (==) Matched vesa as autoconfigured driver 1
[    32.913] (==) Matched fbdev as autoconfigured driver 2

Code: Select all

[ 33.114] (II) UnloadModule: "vesa"
[ 33.114] (II) Unloading vesa
[ 33.114] (II) UnloadModule: "radeon"
[ 33.114] (II) Unloading radeon
and this line of error occurred many times:

Code: Select all

[ 33.181] (EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOPUTCMAP: Invalid argument
Is that normal or something is wrong?

Other informations:
I have already intalled the newest 3.2.0 kernel, xorg, xserver-xorg-video-*, firmware-linux-nonfree, libgl1-mesa-dri, libgl1-mesa-glx from squeeze-backports. I didn't create a xorg.conf.

Code: Select all

 glxinfo | egrep -i 'render'
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer

Re: Why radeon driver is not used?

#2 Post by bw123 »

Don't know if this will help, I have a different board, but I run without xorg.conf and instead use a trimmed down profile for display adapter /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/05-rs480.conf

Also, there's /etc/modeprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf that contains one line, "options radeon modeset=1"

Code: Select all

Re: Why radeon driver is not used?

#3 Post by cynwulf »

It's likely that your graphics chip isn't supported by the version of radeon in stable. You will probably need a newer kernel from backports, as well as xorg, drm and non-free firmware.

Alternatively you can give the proprietary driver a go...

//edit: If you do go for the proprietary driver, the fglrx packages in stable may also be out of date for your graphics chip so you might want to download the installer from AMD...

Hi, thanks for replying! Your solution didn't fit my situation. That line in /etc/modeprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf was correctly set.

Hi. Your judgement is quite right! I downloaded and compiled the new version of radeon and now it works. Thank you!

Sadly 3D acceleration doesn't work yet, might need to compile a newer mesa as well?

Re: Why radeon driver is not used?

Just write down here what I did to compile the radeon driver:

0、(preparatory step) do intall the newest kernel(linux-image-3.2.0-0.bpo.1-686-pae for example), xorg, xserver-xorg-video-*, firmware-linux-nonfree, libgl1-mesa-dri, libgl1-mesa-glx from squeeze-backports. It will most probably work (work means: give you hardware-acceleration, no unneglectable error in Xorg.0.log, etc.) and thus the following steps can be ignored unless you're using hardware as new or newer than me.
1、download the new version from: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-ati/ (for me the xf86-video-ati-6.14.3.tar.gz, while 6.14.2 is in squeeze-backports currently).
2、aptitude -t squeeze-backports build-dep xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon (add squeeze-backports' source to sources.list!)
3、compile it:
./autogen.sh --prefix=/opt/xorg/ati |& tee log1
make |& tee log2
make install |& tee log3
4、tell xorg to find the new driver by creating /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Code: Select all

Section "Files"
	ModulePath "/opt/xorg/ati/lib/xorg/modules"
	ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
EndSection
now radeon is correctly loaded:

Code: Select all

[    34.907] (==) Matched ati as autoconfigured driver 0
[    34.907] (==) Matched vesa as autoconfigured driver 1
[    34.907] (==) Matched fbdev as autoconfigured driver 2

Code: Select all

[ 36.322] (II) UnloadModule: "vesa"
[ 36.322] (II) Unloading vesa
[ 36.322] (II) UnloadModule: "fbdev"
[ 36.322] (II) Unloading fbdev
[ 36.322] (II) UnloadModule: "fbdevhw"
[ 36.322] (II) Unloading fbdevhw
Hardware acceleration still not worked:

Code: Select all

[ 36.586] (EE) AIGLX error: Calling driver entry point failed
[ 36.586] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
[ 36.586] (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
[ 36.703] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so

Code: Select all

glxinfo | egrep 'render'
Unknown chipset 0x9648
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer

Re: Why radeon driver is not used?

#7 Post by Jesse2004 »

Ok, now I've finished compiling mesa-7.11.2.
The result is like this:

Code: Select all

glxinfo | egrep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD SUMO
but in Xorg.0.log:

Code: Select all

[ 47.156] (EE) AIGLX error: Calling driver entry point failed
[ 47.156] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
[ 47.156] (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
[ 47.294] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so
[ 47.294] (II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0

So, can anyone tell me whether hardware-acceleration is enable on my system? Does the above error need to be dealed with? Things above seem contradictory and confusing...

So far - well done. Though you probably could have saved yourself some time and grabbed most of that from squeeze-backports.

Did you upgrade firmware-linux-nonfree? Try adding the squeeze-backports repo and pulling it from there - then restart x and check for those errors again.

You probably need the kernel from backports too... (for the kms/drm bits)

Re: [Solved]Why radeon driver is not loaded? (AMD HD6000 Ser

Finally, I figured out where this error came from:

Code: Select all

[ 36.586] (EE) AIGLX error: Calling driver entry point failed
[ 36.586] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
[ 36.586] (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
[ 36.703] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so
I intalled the compiled mesa driver in /opt/xorg/mesa, and told the dynamic linker to find it by adding /opt/xorg/mesa/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf and then running ldconfig. However, AIGLX uses the (most probably)hardcoded directory /usr/lib/dri to find its drivers while the newly compiled drivers reside in /opt/xorg/mesa/lib/dri. Make a link from /usr/lib to /opt/xorg/mesa/lib/dri does the trick. Now everything works!

Code: Select all

[ 40.652] (II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_MESA_copy_sub_buffer
[ 40.652] (II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_INTEL_swap_event
[ 40.652] (II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_SGI_swap_control and GLX_MESA_swap_control
[ 40.652] (II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_SGI_make_current_read
[ 40.652] (II) AIGLX: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap backed by buffer objects
[ 40.653] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/r600_dri.so
[ 40.653] (II) GLX: Initialized DRI2 GL provider for screen 0
By the way, AIGLX not working is not a big problem since it just means that X cannot use the dri drivers but other programs still have hardware acceleration as indicated by:

Code: Select all

glxinfo | egrep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD SUMO

Thank you both for your kind help! Believe me, I had tried all the stuff from backports before I resorted to compiling.

Also document the procedure of compiling mesa here:

0、(preparatory step) pull the kernel, video drivers, firmwares, libgl1-mesa-dri, libgl1-mesa-glx (maybe also libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental) from backports (read step 0 of the procedure for compiling radeon above). Note on libgl1-mesa-dri and libgl1-mesa-glx: They ARE mesa. More exactly, they constitute the major part of mesa which is needed by normal users. So by installing these two packages (from backports), actually you're getting the debian-packaged version of mesa.
1、download the new version from: http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa (for me the mesa-7.11.2.tar.gz, while 7.10.3 is in squeeze-backports currently). I don't recommend downloading mesa-8.0.tar.gz since its build-dependency cannot be met within squeeze and squeeze-backports currently. So if you want to compile 8.0, you need to do apt-pinning and pull quite a few packages from Wheezy.
2、aptitude -t squeeze-backports build-dep libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx (add squeeze-backports' source to sources.list!). Note: unlike compiling radeon, this command don't get you everything needed for compiling mesa, see below.
3、try to compile it:
(3.1) ./autogen.sh --prefix=/opt/xorg/mesa/ --enable-glx-tls --with-gallium-drivers=r300,r600,swrast,nouveau |& tee log1
Note: (i) running this command will give you information about other dependencies needed, find out which package is needed, install it, then rerun the command until succeed. (ii) the --enable-glx-tls option is mandatory, otherwise system libs in /usr/lib will take precedence over your self-compiled ones. This official site mentioned this http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonBuildHowTo (iii) to find out the meaning of the --with-gallium-drivers option and to view full options that can be pass to autogen.sh, after a successful run of autogen.sh, run ./configure --help
(3.2)make |& tee log2
(3.3)make install |& tee log3
4、tell the dynamic linker where to find the new libraries:
add /opt/xorg/mesa/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf and then run ldconfig as root

Now you 're almost done. You should have hardware-acceleration now. Run glxinfo | egrep render to confirm it. Also run glxgears to enjoy yourself with some gears.

(The following steps are optional. They are used to walkaround the AIGLX problem mentioned above. Don't follow it if you don't understand it. But if you want to use compiz you might want to follow it.)
5、Let ALGLX use the new drivers:
(5.1)(as root) mv /usr/lib/dri /usr/lib/dri.old
(5.2)(run in /usr/lib, make a softlink from /usr/lib to /opt/xorg/mesa/lib/dri) ln -s /opt/xorg/mesa/lib/dri
(5.3)cp /usr/lib/dri.old/dummy_drv_video.so /usr/lib/dri
(dummy_drv_video.so is installed by package other than libgl1-mesa-dri and libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental to /usr/lib/dri, so copy it back)
6、Precaution step. Since we modified system path /usr/lib/dri, do something to avoid future problems:
(6.1)aptitude hold libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental
This is to avoid future upgrage of these packages overwrite things in /usr/lib/dri
(6.2)aptitude install libgl1-mesa-swx11 libgl1-mesa-glx-
(Note the minus sign at the end) Keep a software rasteriser library in system path is enough.
