Turn off system beep when I can't move cursor?

#1 Post by coldReactive »

It's annoying to get the system beep when I can't move the cursor anymore, is there a way to turn it off?

I use alsamixer from alsa-utils package. There's a channel named Beep or PC Beep. Mute it using "m" key.

Or you could prevent the system beep loading by adding the pcspkr module in your blacklist at /etc/modprobe.d/
However, for some strange reason, that will not work (It least, it didn't work with me on squeeze)

But I found a possible solution (not tested yet)

Edit: I found a valuable solution :P
Add this two lines to your /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Code: Select all

blacklist pcspkr
blacklist snd_pcsp
Apparently, the system beep module consists of 2 modules

Sadly, the IBM T41 doesn't have that in alsamixer. laurent's fix worked though.

In system, administration, sound or somewhere like that there is an option to remove beeping. Sorry, I cannot tell you exactly what to do at the moment because I am not on my Debian computer.

I've already fixed it. :|

Also, I don't have gnome, I use openbox.

I can confirm adding "blacklist pcspkr" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf worked for me. You must restart for it to take affect. I run Linux Mint Debian Edition with XFCE on a Dell Studio 15 (1558).

In terminal view not all audio channels are visible, so you have to click the right arrow a few times until the channel "Beep" appears.

Instead of you, I would simply google "beep codes" and maybe, just maybe, understood something.... ....
Mine are Allways ON.

EDIT: Depending on the BIOS code you get at startup there is an existing problem circumcircled by Debian OS and/or, most probably, an future unresolvable problem...

I can confirm this as well. Running Debian GNU/Linux Bullseye and it still works. Make sure you edit all files in modprobe.d as sudo.

Cheers.

I have just upgraded to Debian 11 on my Xfce desktop. All seems to work, except that there is an annoying beep when selecting Applications>Logout from the Whisker menu. I cannot be sure if this is the same issue as the OP or not.

In any case, I am attaching a screenshot to show no option in alsamixer. https://ibb.co/VWwZMR1

In my case I hate to make file changes when all that was done was upgrade the OS. I'd rather know what caused the change.

If one uses a .xinitrc they can add: xset b off, which turns the bell off in X. That works for me. I suppose it could be added to .xprofile alternatively.

Because not all audio channels are shown in terminal view, you must repeatedly click the right arrow until the channel "Beep" shows.

I don't understand. If there are only two items shown and a person has already clicked the right arrow repeatedly, what is supposed to show up? There can be a screen full of items before needing to scroll the screen. Obviously there is no need to scroll when there is plenty of room. The system beep item does not exist there. Something has clearly changed from Buster to Bullseye.

"xset b off" will shut off the beep. I just stick it in .xinitrc

Hope this helps -

I can try that, and thanks for it.

However, I would like to know why things changed. I have random beeps at times, which are not the same as the shutdown beep. There is no beep or pop up when notification is supposed to be showing new mail as it used to do. I remain confused as to why the need for manual intervention, as I'm sure are other users.

I cannot find .xinitrc in my system.

Bottom line; has anyone figured out why there was a change during upgrade?
