Oh no! Something has gone wrong. GNOME-shell

#1 Post by g1annos »

After upgrading the last packages I cannot login to GNOME-Shell. It crashes giving the following message:

Oh no! Something has gone wrong.
A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Some of the extensions bellow may have caused this.
Please try disabling some of these and then log out and try again.

Normally, I used to disable some of the installed extensions and then I could login. Now, I have disabled all of them but unfortunately there still something still goes wrong.

Any ideas?

Start by looking here -
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgrepor ... nome-shell

I had this problem awhile back -
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=665808
Installing network-manager fixed it.

If you're going to run testing or sid you NEED to know how to make and look up bug reports, that's your obligation as a testing or sid user.
also, install apt-listbugs and READ what it tells you before you upgrade or dist-upgrade.

Unfortunately it does not fix the problem for me...

I had a look in some tens of relative bugs but there is nothing that matches mine.

Which log should I see that could lead me to the reason?

In fact there is a problem related with cogl

Code: Select all

[ 4240.177926] gnome-shell[5360]: segfault at 58 ip 00007f8ffa6c4765 sp 00007fff96699b18 error 4 in libcogl.so.5.0.1[7f8ffa67f000+75000]
[ 4242.717814] gnome-shell[5471]: segfault at 58 ip 00007f56f5a84765 sp 00007fffb291d558 error 4 in libcogl.so.5.0.1[7f56f5a3f000+75000]
Is there something useful? I cannot find something relative reported except that, but it is too complicated for me to understand.

looks like it has something to do with your video card / 3d rendering.

Sid is being a little feisty at the moment, Gnome 3.4 is filtering through the packages at the moment, leading to a lot of mixing of 3.2 and 3.4 pakages, that could be something to do with it, but seems more like a upstream bug to me. Either way it should sort itself out with through natural updating. If you need to use your system in the mean time, how about fallback mode? ( its what i use so have not noticed anything with gnome shell ) or if thats not good for you, how about Cinnamon ? Thats on the LMDE repo's and MUCH better than gnome shell anyway, just run one of the alternatives untill GShell sorts itself out.

My laptop has been working fine up to last night for approx 6 months, and today I get that error message when I login. I haven't done any updates for a few days, so I don't know why it suddenly did that. However, I've done some testing and think I found the culprit. When I get that message, I switch to a console and remove the user file in .config/dconf and then login into Gnome just fine. I then discovered that this survives further logins and reboots UNLESS I change a setting, either directly with the DConf Editor or System Settings.

same thing happened to me. only difference is that I get segfaults for libmouse.so
solution is the same, deleting ~/.config/dconf/user
problem comes back when i change mouse & touchpad settings in System Settings.

I'm the one who started this thread.

Try an other video card. If you have GeForce 7100 you have to know that there is a bug related to the driver that affects cogl, and this is not gonna be a bug fix.

And if you were talking to me, there appears to be many differing reports of why you get this message. In our case, it's nothing to do with video. I can use Gnome-Shell just fine. For us, there is a bug with Gnome-Settings-Daemon.
Sorry if I hi-jacked your thread, but the error message is the same. Clearly for different reasons, though.

Hi,

I just encoutered this problem.
In my case, it was: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=697427

I could restore my settings like this :
  • - Alt-Ctrl-F1 then login in the console
    - extract the current settings and disable them :

    Code: Select all

    cd ~/.config/dconf
    dconf dump / > user.txt
    mv user user.bad
    - edit the user.txt file and remove the following line:
    disable-while-typing=true
    - restart the gnome session
    - open a terminal and reload the fixed settings :

    Code: Select all

    cd ~/.config/dconf
    cat user.txt | dconf load /

I hadn't come across this, but I just tried this work-around and now all is ok.

Hello.

Just had gdm3/gnome-shell broken a few day ago on my desktop and this morning on my netbook with this kind of error in my dmesg (Sid way to wish me a merry Xmas i guess) :

Code: Select all

gnome-shell: segfault at 58 ip 00007f8ffa6c4765 sp 00007fff96699b18 error 4 in libcogl.so.12.1.1
After some long researches, many tries, i finally ran :

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 libgdk-pixbuf2.0-common
And then rebooted ... and it works.

Hope this would help others people passing by this forum.
