flash fails in iceweasel and chromium

#1 Post by fz0dbx »

Recently flash quit working on my Wheezy box. I have tried installing both flashplayer-mozilla and flashplugin-nonfree from debian multimedia. Neither seem to work in Iceweasel or chromium. If I go to about:plugins, they both show shockwave flash is installed. However, neither will play any flash. If I go to adobe's flash test site, it show that a plugin is needed. This used to work. Why does it show in about:plugins yet say it is missing? Any ideas on fixing this? It works on my other wheezy computers. This is the only one that is running the Nvidia proprietary drivers.

I have the nvidia drivers installed too and flash 11-1 works fine in Squeeze, Wheezy and Sid. Flash 11-2 makes all faces blue regardless of skin color. Have you looked at Tools>Add-ons>Plugins to make sure flash is not disabled.

Nothing strange there, I thought that Gnash or maybe both Flash packages might be installed.
Delete the cache of both browsers, close them and delete the directories ~/.adobe and ~/.macromedia. Then purge flashplugin-nonfree and install flashplayer-mozilla.

I did all of that. Flash still doesn't work even though about:plugins says it is installed and enabled. The adobe flash test site still says a plugin is needed.

I am having a similar problem in that the sound in youtube videos stopped a fortnight ago. The videos play fine but no sound at all. There is no Flash file in /tmp

However I can play youtube videos with sound direct from embedded 'youtubes' in web pages . When I do this a Flash file appears in /tmp which I can then copy to a permanent location.

Sound works ok with .flv files on my hdd and other video file formats.

There have been no system alterations for a few months.

Thanks for your help

When I go to the adobe flash test site and it tells me a plugin is needed, I click on the find plugin and it tells me:

Unknown plugin (application/x-director)

Any embeded flash just shows a black window with no controls. Right clicking in the black flash window does not bring up the usual flash right click window, it just brings up the regular iceweasel right click window. I tried going to a youtube page with flash with a web console open. I get a lot of errors. Does anyone have any ideas?

This is the web consule in iceweasel:

It looks like you are using flashplayer-mozilla. Have you tried to reinstall it yet. If that doesn't work try flashplugin-nonfree but remove flashplayer-mozilla first. The there is always a manual install from Adobe or if you have an older version on a different computer. Don't forget to check and make sure you are using the right version 32 bit on a 32 bit machine, I know but I've made that mistake before. And last but maybe not least is gnash.

I have already tried bouncing back and forth with the two different flash players multiple times. I haven't tried gnash.

Delete pluginreg.dat in .mozilla for each Iceweasel profile.

For Chromium delete the cache in .cache

If all else fails, purge both apps including flash

apt-get purge iceweasel chromium

apt-get install iceweasel

then reinstall flash, I suggest using flashplayer-mozilla in 8 yrs of running Debian I have never had any issues with it

Flash works in every browser I have installed, including Iceweasel, Firefox, Chrome, Konqueror, Midori, uzbl
Do NOT open any browser as root.

You can also try creating a new user and see if flash works for them.

While not made for Debian you might also try the Flash-aid extension for Firefox/Iceweasel.

Take a look at Linux Mint Forums • View topic - Old Adobe Flash Player - http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.ph ... ae4a183de6

Especially the last post and see if it helps.

I purged iceweasel, chromium, and flash again and reinstalled. Flash still does not work in chromium, iceweasel, iceape.
I tried creating the mms.cfg and putting EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode = 1
OverrideGPUValidation=true
in it. It doesn't help.

Basically, even though flash shows up in about::plugins, when going to a page with flash, the browsers still say a plugin is needed. Sometimes chromium says the plugin needs permission to run and I click on allow but still it doesn't work.

This is maddening. I have 4 other computers running the same level of debian and flash works on all of them. This is the only one I am running the nvidia driver on. Maybe the next step is to try the noveau driver.

I installed the flash-aid extension. I can't tell that it did anything. It said it was installing and then asked if I wanted to restart so I did. After iceweasel restarted, it came back up to the flash-aid extension install page. I can't tell that it did anything with flash. The same flash shows up in about::plugins. I don't see any flash-aid plugin in about::plugins.

With flash-aid to work you have to be a member of of sudo group and run the script after Iceweasel restarts. You should have a icon on the address bar on the far right just click that and try different things. Anyways it took the blue lips and face away by installing the correct flash for Wheezy.

I ran flash-aid and had it write the script to the desktop. Then I ran the script as root and it installed flash. It didn't help.

Didn't work that way for me either. I had to be a member of sudo before it would work.
