I was reading the article on the main page about Debian From Scratch and one thing I don't know is: Bootstrapping

Can somebody tell me what bootstrapping is?

bootstrap

1. <operating system> (From "to pull oneself up by one's
bootstraps") To load and initialise the operating system on
a computer. Normally abbreviated to "boot".
