Xorg configure file

#1 Post by jeff3553 »

I am following

http://wiki.debian.org/Xorg
The part that says: What if I do not have an xorg config file?
What I have done:
Logged out of all accounts.
Pressed ctrl-alt-f1 to enter console mode.
Logged in as user
su
enter root password
Then enter this:

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/gdm stop
/etc/init.d/gdm3 stop
/etc/init.d/kdm stop
/etc/init.d/xdm stop
cd /etc/X11/
Xorg -configure
However after the last line it gives me an error
What can I do besides follow the guide exactly
I think this is the correct log file

Code: Select all

Instead of 'xorg -configure' try 'Xorg -configure'.

That's what I am doing. I did notice the capital:shock:

I want to install compiz
This is what I have done:

Code: Select all

aptitude install compiz compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-gnome compiz-gtk
Restart your X.org server and login into GNOME.
How to restart that? I have no idea and there is no explanation so I have tried restarting the computer.

Code: Select all

root@windows96:/home/lol# compiz --replace
compiz (core) - Warn: SmcOpenConnection failed: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported
compiz (core) - Warn: SmcOpenConnection failed: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported
compiz (core) - Fatal: Software rendering detected.
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Launching fallback window manager
How can I figure this out what am I doing wrong? When I have used ubuntu before compiz just worked automatically. Now i can't run it following these guides as best I can.

Code: Select all

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Device 679a
Opengl doesn't seem to be working either. Guess that's related to all of this

According to search engines that is an AMD 7900 series GPU? If you can confirm that - here is the summary:

The ati/radeon drivers in Debian squeeze's 2.6.32 kernel do not support it.

Debian Squeeze's fglrx proprietary driver version does not support it.

The backports kernel and ati/radeon xorg driver may support it.

The backports fglrx may support it.

fglrx/catalyst 12.x from AMD's website may support it on xserver 1.7 - not sure.

You could install/upgrade to wheezy, but based on your being an absolute beginner, I'd advise against it.

The best course of action seems to be found here:

Yes, it is amd 7900 series.

I'd not say I'm an absolute beginner. I have switched between ubuntu and windows for a few years. Yet not learning much during ubuntu usage because after the install is setup and everything is working I rarely have need to enter the terminal, which is how I like it. That's what I'm trying to do here. Install everything I need and then just use the pc.
I don't know how different it is to upgrade squeeze to wheezy, I have upgraded ubuntu installs before. So it will work on wheezy?

When I say it worked on ubuntu in the past that was with an older nvidia graphics card and also with intel intergrated (on my i3 laptop).
I don't know if the 7900 will work or not.

This could work? http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/l ... ng=English

I came across this wiki but it seems messy http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Debian

Next time maybe mention that in your original post?

Upgrading Debian is more reliable than upgrading buntu but requires use of the command line.

Download the driver, follow the wiki and see how it goes...
