The problem is that fancontrol does not work. I receive the following working when I start my notebook

Code: Select all

[warn] Not starting fancontrol; run pwmconfig first. ... (warning).
When I try to start fancontrol by myself i receive

Code: Select all

root@Host-001:/home/bruno# /etc/init.d/fancontrol start
[warn] Not starting fancontrol; run pwmconfig first. ... (warning).
If I try to run pwmconfig however

Code: Select all

root@Host-001:/home/bruno# pwmconfig
# pwmconfig revision 5857 (2010-08-22)
This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)
controls, and test each one to see if it controls a fan on
your motherboard. Note that many motherboards do not have pwm
circuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm.

We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls.
The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed
after testing. However, it is ** very important ** that you
physically verify that the fans have been to full speed
after the program has completed.

/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed
It seems that the fan are working properly so I don't know if this is a problem.

This is my Debian version

Code: Select all

root@Host-001:/home/bruno# cat /etc/debian_version
wheezy/sid
Thank you for your suggestions!

 me too.. i have this problem about a month now but never managed to solve it..

the only difference is that when i run pwmconfig, i get

Code: Select all

Found the following devices:
   hwmon0/device is coretemp
   hwmon1/device is it8728

Found the following PWM controls:
   hwmon1/device/pwm1
   hwmon1/device/pwm2
hwmon1/device/pwm2 is currently setup for automatic speed control.
In general, automatic mode is preferred over manual mode, as
it is more efficient and it reacts faster. Are you sure that
you want to setup this output for manual control? (n)
it asks me to manually insert threshold values, which is something i want to avoid, it seems that there is no default config.

have you installed lm-sensors, and run sensors-detect?

I'm also facing the same problem. Has anyone have had success with this?

If you ran pwmconfig as root and accepted the defaults for your coretemp controller then ran /usr/sbin/fancontrol, it should work. I just resolved this very issue on my machine and may be able to help. Two things to check first:
1. Does /etc/modules contain 'coretemp' on the appropriate line (at the end of the list)?
2. Is it uncommented?

What kind of laptop and what chipset does it have?

I have a Vaio with the ivy bridge and there is a patch that has to be applied against the kernel to get the fan controller to work. I have yet to have a kernel I've compiled work right so I'm currently doing without.

Add

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet acpi_enforce_resources=lax"
to /etc/default/grub and update grub

Congrats on the fix yzT but I wouldn't mess with GRUB until I exhausted the normal configuration attempts.

Well, I guess you can't argue with success. 8)
How do you have your ACPI configured? Have you turned it off in the bios letting linux handle the interrupts?
