Thunar "not authorized" to mount disks?

#1 Post by andrewrogers »

I really don't wanna mess with my fstab if I don't have to...

Has anyone else had this problem?

Image

It wasn't just for SD cards, either, though. It is also this way for hard disks, as well.

Is the device in fstab? Is the "user" option specified?

It's a removable USB SD card reader...

Here's my fstab. It's just all of the defaults. I've never changed it on this machine.

Code: Select all

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
# / was on /dev/sdd2 during installation
UUID=759a71bc-1d29-4e57-9d6c-2de18ef490a9 /               ext4    errors=remount-ro 0       1
# /boot/efi was on /dev/sdd1 during installation
UUID=A6D6-C3FF  /boot/efi       vfat    defaults        0       1
# swap was on /dev/sdd3 during installation
UUID=d242a60b-9812-4de4-b574-c2452439b54f none            swap    sw              0       0
/dev/sr0        /media/cdrom0   udf,iso9660 user,noauto     0       0
/dev/sr1        /media/cdrom1   udf,iso9660 user,noauto     0       0
/dev/sde1       /media/usb0     auto    rw,user,noauto  0       0
/dev/sde2       /media/usb1     auto    rw,user,noauto  0       0
It appears the "user" option is, indeed, specified.

Thunar mounts files just fine on my other machine, the Ivy Bridge...

Okay, so I RTFM'd...

Here's what I found:
http://bbs.archbang.org/viewtopic.php?id=289

I did:

Code: Select all

sudo groupadd storage
and then:

Code: Select all

sudo gpasswd -a [username] storage
I'm testing it now...

Just in case the very first thing you try doesn't work, there are hundreds more to choose from.

Please don't feel the need to report back on each and every thing you try. Just the one that solves your issue.

smells like a policykit issue

think thunar needs the gnome policykit packages, if I recall

seriously, my hint was that irrelevant and
you found no clue by looking at your working thunar?

you did compare the two, no?

How would I verify this?

In this case, RTFM and LMGTFY may be a tad harsh. Because back in 2011, when Xfce upgraded to version 4.8, stuff todo with authorization for mounting, reboot etc. broke because of the introduction of two new packages, namely policykit and consolekit. These new packages ostensibly provided a better way to manage permissions system-wide. But the result lead to some huge threads trying to fix what was broken.

But since then, I believe most of the broken policy/consolekit behavior has been fixed.
Such that if you are reading dated threads from 2011, the solutions offered up then may be less than helpful now.

Anyhow, check if you have console/policykit daemons running in the background...

Code: Select all

$ ps -ef | grep -i '[p]olicy\|[c]onsole'
/usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon
/usr/lib/policykit-1/polkitd
/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1

And I'm guessing the policykit settings for mounting etc. are found in /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy.

You would ensure that the policykit-1 and policykit-1-gnome packages are installed. That would be a start.

Oh, and do you use a login manager? If so, which one?

And last but not least, which groups is your user a member of?

Lol, I don't even use a login manager! :mrgreen: I just made ~/.xinitrc do this:

Code: Select all

exec startfluxbox
That's my entire xinitrc, lol!

Code: Select all

groups [my_user]
returns:

Code: Select all

[my_user] : [my_user] cdrom floppy audio dip video plugdev scanner netdev bluetooth libvirtd
EDIT: the aforementioned policykit-1 and policykit-1-gnome packages are, indeed, installed.

Yea you will need to use a login manager or setup the proper session...

might want to start with

Is there a way to do this with startfluxbox? Neither my Ivy Bridge or my TiBook use a manager, but it only works on the Ivy Bridge...

Here are the groups my user is in on the Ivy Bridge:

Code: Select all

[user] : [user] cdrom floppy audio dip video plugdev scanner netdev storage

which I think is....

be sure the consolekit, policykit, udisks stuff is installed and then create /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/udisks.pkla containing

Code: Select all

[udisks]
Identity=unix-user:*
Action=org.freedesktop.udisks*
ResultAny=yes

not sure I have run into this problem myself but when I run a minimal install it is usually without all that *kit stuff and personally I just use pmount
