Try with linux-image-3.2.0-4-486

Description: Linux 3.2 for older PCs
The Linux kernel 3.2 and modules for use on PCs with a single processor not supporting PAE

All CPU are now supporting PAE.
Then, old/486 now means non-PAE !

Once upon a time there was a 686 kernel - it was dropped, so now users who had to use 686 now need the 486 kernel. (If you really want a 686 kernel you could build one.)

My memory is fuzzy on this (so I welcome correction/clarification), but the 486 kernel builds are for any CPU's which were not "pentium pro class" (P6 (Pentium Pro/II/III)), i.e. lacking the cmov instruction (e.g. the AMD K5/K6 CPUs and earlier P5 (original pentium) which are 586 class).

686 was for any CPU, pentium pro class and upwards, which does not support PAE/NX bit.

686-pae is for all newer 32 bit CPUs (or "amd64" (all modern intel/amd CPU's with the exception of IA64) CPUs if you still want to run a 32 bit kernel).

According to wikipedia, not all models of the Dothan support PAE/NX: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_I ... 2890_nm.29

A bad day at the Big Box stores, so here I am!

I dug out my 10 year old Gateway laptop which does contain a Centrino Pentium M Dothan processor.

I then proceeded to install 686 and 686-PAE kernels in addition to the already present 486.

All three work for me.

All my kernels are Towo's so maybe it's his magic.
Warning, failure messages in Linux are lies!...................If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Where did you find a Wheezy with kernel not-pae?

Thanks :)
