DVDs Won't Eject During Install

Postby gglazer » 2013-12-14 20:24

Relevant Machine Components:

1 x Intel Core i7 870 2.93Ghz, 4x256K L2, 8M L3, Hyperthreading, Socket 1156, 4-core
8GB DDR3-1333 unbuffered, non-ECC (2GBx4)
Sony AD-7240S-0B 24xDVD+-R,8xDVD+RW,6xDVD-RW,12xDVD+R DL,4x DVD-R DL,48xCDR,32xCDRW,48xCDROM,16xDVDROM,Serial ATA, 2MB, Black (bare drive)
Fedora dating from around 2009.

Steps:

1) Downloaded all four 2.7 disc iso images on this machine (three OS plus the update)
2) Burnt DVDs on the same same machine.
3) Reboot into the first DVD

Results:

Graphical installer goes through most of the steps (network, partitioning, etc.) correctly, but then when the installer asked for the DVD to be ejected, the button failed to work, eventually requiring a paper clip to force the eject. Inserting the next disc required several retries to get it to scan and the third disc just wouldn't work.

Post test:

Eventually, I was able to get the OS installed, though with fewer initial packages than I might want. Once the system was booted, I tested all four discs and I was able to navigate them in Nautilus, load and eject them normally.

So my questions two are:

1) How do I get the install to work normally?
2) Is there a way to get a terminal window during a graphical install (so I can try 'eject cdrom')?

Many thanks,

Glenn

you only need the 1st dvd,if you have good internet,as the installer can download the rest, better still use a netinstall cd/dvd/usb. to get a terminal during install try the keys f1 upwards
free your computer,use opensource

Installing from one disc worked, thanks! Wasn't able to get a terminal up, but no need now.

I can't remember the exact sequence, but...
Prompted to scan another CD/DVD
Press drive eject button, no result
Click "ok" to scan, get "Please insert..." message again
Press button again, CD ejects.

I had to fiddle with it a bit, but it's something like that.

Four wheel drive allows you to get stuck
in places even more inaccessible.

Thanks, Rovernut.

I sometime ago just took Deltaflyer's advice and retrieved all of the packages over the net, but the fiddly bit is interesting to know.

Best,
