Hello, this is my first question here. After installing Debian Jessie, the Bible program Xiphos comes in a new version: 3.2. But something strange happens: it is not possible to open the Preferences (Menu Edit --> Preferences). I think this is a major bug.
The other Bible program, Bibletime, is no more in the repositories. If i install it from Wheezy, it does not work properly. So we have a important difficulty here.
Anybody knows a way to solve this problem?

I see you've reported the bug twice in the Debian bug tracker and once on the website.
You could also run the command inside a terminal window and see what output is written
in the terminal when you enter the preferences.

No biggie. It was great that you've reported the error.
You could send that output to the developer, so they can assess the situation.
You can also try to downgrade to the version of Xiphos in Wheezy and see if the
error is in Xiphos itself or in some library from the Jessie repos.

The wheezy version 3.1.5 has no problem with the preferences, but results in package broken.
The problem seems therefore to be in the application itself, not in the libraries.
In wheezy is Xiphos 3.1.5, while in jessie it is 3.2

I have installed (with Playonlinux) the windows version of Xiphos 3.2
The Windows version (sad to say!) actually opens the Preferences menu. Nevertheless, the opening of this menu fails sometimes, and you get the Preferences only by closing Xiphos and opening it again. Therefore, I think that there is something in the code of this version of Xiphos related to the Preferences.

I have installed Debian Jessie in a i386 machine.
Xiphos has there the same problem: it cannot open the Preferences window.

One test more: I have installed bibletime from Sid. (There is NO bibletime in Jessie, and the bibletime from wheezy does not work very well).

It is possible to build Xiphos against GTK+ 2 instead of GTk+ 3 (Jessie's build). Let me see if that makes a difference.
Confirmed: I'm running on a Wheezy base, so had to backport Jessie's libsword first, then edited the build-depends for Xiphos to use the gtk+ 2 versions, and then got a successful build, packaging, and install. Preferences worked.
Note: I don't know if this is normal, but Xiphos wanted me to enter a cipher code for a NET module when I started up. I canceled that, then tested Preferences.
Edited build-depends to use libgtk2, you should also make sure libgtk -3-dev is not installed.

Thanks for the feedback! A few corrections:
will install the build depends for the unedited Debian version. What I do instead is launch the build command. If I am missing any build-deps, I'll get an error message listing them, then I copy that list and paste it into an apt-get install command, editing out any version info. You just need a string of package names.
For building a package, I just use
This way you also get some source packages generated also, which can be handy if you have to restart the build and you need clean source packages to start again from. Debuild is provided by the devscripts package.
To avoid the problem of Debian upgrading over your version, you can add or increment the "epoch" of your version in debian/changelog, so if the first line in the file originally says something like
adding an epoch makes it
The epoch does not affect how the system handles the versioning, except to make it always seen as a higher version than any version without the epoch.

I'm project admin of Xiphos, and as mentioned, this is pretty clearly a packaging error. I am running a GTK3 build myself right now on Fedora. The clear indication is the error log posted by someone:

(and so on...)
The window fails to come into existence, and thereafter there is repetitious "null pointer -- signal connect failed". This is clearly an attempt to instantiate the prefs window when prefs.gtkbuilder (in /usr/share/xiphos) is missing. For GTK2, there is prefs.glade, and prefs.gtkbuilder for GTK3.
Correct the packaging and all will be fine.
And prettyplease don't publicly malign our work on Xiphos without checking directly at https://sourceforge.net/p/gnomesword/bugs/ first. We're a small project and actually quite responsive; the bug list is kept very short. Thanks! Let me look at the Debian packaging--it may just be an issue of adding that file to on of the .install files. It's arch-independent, so would probably be in the data file.
Edit: It appears that they both are installed with the GTK 3 Debian xiphos-data package:
and also the modified GTK 2. Can someone with the Jessie GTK 3 version delete or move the prefs.glade file to confirm that will get the preferences for it working?
I think you can create a file called debian/not-installed and list the offending file file in it to keep it out of the deb, otherwise, we'd have to delete it in the debian/rules file.

Wow, that seems like the same errors. I can try a couple more ways of attacking this issue on my own machine...so hang on. At least we know the GTK 2 built version works.
The Jessie build-depend have alternative build-depends that mix GTK 2 and 3 header packages. I wonder if the Jessie build has mixed gtk2 and gtk3 dependencies?

OK, I built it in Wheezy against Wheezy's gtk3 3.4 and this set of build-dependencies:

Xiphos developers are confirming that the problem is related to the last versions of gtk 3:
several *.glade as well as prefs.gtkbuilder contained a "has_separator" element. apparently this has been deprecated for some time. but it seems that, just since gtk 3.14, the presence of this in a gtkbuilder file causes initialization to fail completely. this is to say, this may not be a packaging error; rather, systems where prefs initialization fails are probably gtk 3.14 and has_separator is inducing failure to create the window.
oh, THANK YOU SO @#$% MUCH, GTK3, we are SO GLAD to waste our time chasing your "improvements". sheesh.
several other gtk 3.14 oddities have been chased down as a result, including standard icon names that have changed. updates have been made in svn. if you wish to build against gtk3, either get a current xiphos svn tree, or go to https://sourceforge.net/projects/gnomes ... s/Testing/ where you will find 3.2.3j source tarball (test/unofficial).
regrets for this madness, but we are particularly annoyed at having to chase down gratuitous and pointless changes in gtk3.
please feel free to forward this explanation to the bug report forum previously mentioned, and be sure to include a proper sense of our irritation at this idiocy.
