NitroShare on Debian
NitroShare on Debian
NitroShare is a network file-sharing program that is easier to setup and use than FTP and much easier than samba. I use it to send files between my desktop (running Debian Testing) and all my laptops (running elementaryOS). For now, NitroShare is only available on Ubuntu and if you try to install on Debian, you will get dependency errors. If anyone is interested, here is how I got NitroShare working on Debian Testing.
First, download sni-qt (it's a dependency you will need) from http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/co ... ase/sni-qt
There is a 32 bit and a 64 version. Get whichever one you need.
Direct download links:
http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/ ... 1_i386.deb
http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/ ... _amd64.deb
I installed it using gdebi.
Then download and install NitroShare. You can get it from https://launchpad.net/nitroshare
Once you have it installed, setup is pretty easy.
Here are some youtube videos that show you how:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqOz6Km-p-4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QduAP4CxXI
or just search Youtube for "NitroShare"
or if you are really patient, wait until it shows up in the debian repositories.

To people who want to follow this guide; please note that the person used Debian Testing when installing Nitroshare. So you will most likely will not have the same experience with installing it on stable.

More importantly NEVER install Ubuntu packages on a Debian system. Also never mix distros or Debian releases.

Re: NitroShare on Debian
What's the point of sni-qt? Isn't just something to translate qt systray to Unity appindicators? The notes in the source also say that it only works with a specially patched qt4...
Anyway, I built Wheezy compatible debs of the two packages mentioned. I don't have a local network to test them with...

Yes yes that too, 100%!! I felt that I didn't need to point that out as the URL I linked already stressed thatcraigevil wrote:Ardouos wrote:To people who want to follow this guide; please note that the person used Debian Testing when installing Nitroshare. Re: NitroShare on Debian
It's a bit annoying that people will write these long guides about installing packages from PPAs, when it takes less time, at least for these small packages, to rebuild from the PPA source packages and be certain that they are completely compatible.

Re: NitroShare on Debian
Here's a similar utility that has been confirmed to work on the wheezy-based MX 14, called "dukto".

Packages that will work on Wheezy are here, along with the debianized source files if you want to build your own packages.

The threads should simply be removed and the author should be informed about "how-to write a how-to"stevepusser wrote:It's a bit annoying that people will write these long guides about installing packages from PPAs.

Not sure what the staff is good for at all.
Re: NitroShare on Debian
I don't know about NitroShare but sni-qt will be needed on Debian (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=712938). It isn't just for Unity.stevepusser wrote:What's the point of sni-qt? Isn't just something to translate qt systray to Unity appindicators?

Just a quick heads-up to let you all know that NitroShare has finally landed in Debian unstable.

Re: NitroShare on Debian
You could request it in the backports mailing list, but I went ahead and set it up in a backports repo myself on the OBS in a few minutes: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show ... nitroshare
It will pull in an additonal backported libqhttpengine library that's also in that repo. The download package link will lead to an instruction page, or use these ones in the terminal:
with sudo or as root, add the repo:
as regular user, get the repo signing key:
with sudo or as root, install the key, update package database, and install nitroshare:
Tip for complete newbies: copy and paste the commands into the terminal one line at a time.
