(SOLVED) Auto Upgrade from debian 8 Jessie to Debian 9 Sid

#1 Post by Calin Roman »

Hello!

My system: Debian GNU/Linux stretch/sid 64-bit Gnome 3.16.2

Yesterday i was invited by the package updater to install some updates 800+ all of it, after update complete i realize that OS upgraded to Sid, i din-t realize that so many packages mean upgrade, just because i haven't sleep 36 hours before.

my source list was:

deb http://ftp.ro.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free

deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free

Skype deseapear! Also is there a possibility to down grade back to Jesse or only to reinstall OS?
Thanks in advance!

And how does it look now? You had also already a mishmash of Jessie and Wheezy before.

You can try it, but it isn't supported and not that easy (With apt-pinning. Check this Link [1] and use Jessie instead of Wheezy). Re-installation is much faster.

If that is your complete sources.list, you did not upgrade to Sid. If you did upgrade to Sid, then there is something else on that list you did not include. As already alluded to, the sources you have provided are for two Debian releases: the current release and the previous one.

@OP: It's clear that you are nowhere near ready to run Sid, if for no other reason that anyone who's ready to run Sid wouldn't confuse it with "Debian 9."

It's equally clear that you're not telling the truth about what happened, because it is quite literally impossible for the sources.list you posted to result in an unintended switch to Unstable. There's no point in anyone trying to help you when you're not willing to provide accurate, truthful information. (And please, do yourself a favor and don't compound your problem by insisting that you were/are telling the truth. It absolutely will not convince anyone and will serve only to embarrass you further.)

If you're determined to use Debian, then reinstall Stable, and quit trying to chase some SNS package. But since your posting history is all about running nonfree software (such as skype and steam), there's really no reason for you to be using Debian at all. Save yourself (and everyone else) a lot of time and aggravation and choose some Debian respin that pre-installs and preconfigures all that nonfree stuff for you. There are dozens of such respins to choose from.

Here's a partial list of the homework you should have done before trying to switch:

He upgraded to "testing/Stretch", according to the first list he posted.

If you want to upgrade to sid, loose the last two lines. You only need the first line.

+1
Besides the error of captilizing "Sid", there are no Sid update repositories. Think about it. The OP is really not ready to run Sid--maybe Siduction would be easier.

He probably should reinstall, and stay away from altering the sources.list, until he knows what he's doing. There is another thing to do when upgrading to Sid. Make sure to change or delete the /etc/apt/preference file if there is one, or any preference file in preferences.d.

If not mixing sources, there is no need for apt-pinning.

I am tottaly agree with both of you!!

I reinstall jessie and now may source list look like that:

#
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie main
deb-src http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie main

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib

# jessie-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib
deb-src http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib

deb http://http.debian.net/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free

I came with these idea to forum admins: I think it will be more easy searching if in help category will be added a sub category named: „Debian Releases” and others subcategories for each debian release. what do you think?

So as you: Bulkley, spacex and others, are more program oriented people, and if you know Debian!

Will be in the spirit of Debian philosophy if you will Wright posts like these: http://www.geekykool.com/ten-things-to- ... -8-jessie/ for every debian release (maybe even testing and unstable version is better to have it-s own subcategory)! and post-it as first post in each debian release subcategory. It will be discussed as semi-official debian instructions of actions to take!!! Also it will be great in second post to orient on installation on such programs as: Skype, Steam, Wine...

So if you like these idea, support it! and wright to admins.

It looks like that you have two entries (the first one and the last one) in sources.list for the same repo. I also think that you don't use the source code of a package. Please use the following sources.list instead to avoid problems:

Code: Select all

deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free

# jessie-updates, previously known as 'volatile'
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free

#deb http://http.debian.net/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
Have a nice day!
