ISP authentification failed, is there anything I need to do

I am running debian sarge kernel 2.6.?, everytime I try to connect using my data fax modem, the process goes as far as authentification and then fails. Is there something to do that I dont yet know about or are there some scripts to use. I have edited pppconfig appropriately and alsotried two different ISP's, still the same problem. I usualy use broadband connection but it is down at the moment, due to house move. can anyone help,,,,,please

also, I am using both wvdial and gnome to initiate my dialup connection
