deb-multimedia.org shut down?

Postby Dan158 » 2015-10-31 21:53

I tried to run an update and found all references to deb-multimedia returning nothing and it actually froze my synaptic update long enough to get my attention.
I went to the website; www.deb-multimedia.org and found a blank page, searching for deb-multimedia led me to an domain name seller (though I did not follow the redirect on the page from there)

Is that it? do we need to rework all of our precariously balanced multi-media structures now?
I've been running Jessie, with Jack-audio (for jack specific audio editing programs), NO pulseaudio (what a damned hassle the pulse-predators have made That!), NVidia CUDA and various auxiliaries for Blender AVI, video editing, and 3D Modeling,
and wine stitched into all that, from http://liquorix.net/ .

Anybody know anything about this? Has deb-multimedia.org posted anything here? (I do hope they are alright).
I've searched the forum for deb-multimedia and found no reference to a shutdown.

Thanks for any info, Dan

http://www.deb-multimedia.org is redirected now to http://www.deb.multimedia.org (notice the dot instead of the dash) and is a domain name selling add.
because of that the 'is it up' site gives a false read saying that it is up.

good link though, -> ( http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ ), I'm saving that, thank you.

Thanks, d_l_n

It's back up.
The MX Linux repositories: Backports galore! If we don't have something, just ask and we'll try--we like challenges. New packages: Kodi 18.5, Blender 2.8.2, 5.5 kernels, Openshot 2.5.1, Telegram-desktop 1.9.19, Clipgrab 3.8.11

It was down long enough that I found out I can live without it, and have removed it entirely from my system.

It was down for what?.... a day? Why would you remove it from your system because of that? I have a file from it, but it's commented out most of the time. I'm not going to get rid of it because they had a server issue.

You can avoid using it to get libdvdcss2 by using libdvd-pkg from upstream to autobuild your own package. These is also apparently fully legal in the US. Being just a script, the upstream version is safe to install in Jessie or Wheezy.

Sadly, because just paying for the device that can play DVD videos is so cheap. "Real people" apparently have to pay for the codecs as well.
But just in case you want to be on the safe side, there _are_ legal DVD codecs for Linux:

I'm fairly sure that this workaround wouldn't be in the repo if it wasn't fully legal, in Debian's opinion.
