Iceweasel crashes when opening arbitrary file (.pdf, .odt)

#1 Post by flannigan »

Hello friends,

my Iceweasel always crashes when I attempt to open any file (usually pdfs, but I tried with .odt too). I only found this thread http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=68688
and commented out as told by MekkaGodzilla
in /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/default-modules.conf
Coment out this line :
file:file
but no effect.
I use KDE but since I have no idea what the above does I tried it anyway (though it probably only does something when using gnome, right?).
It does not solve the problem as for the other people in the mentioned thread.
What should I do?

Mozilla Iceweasel 31.7.0
KDE Development Platform: 4.14.2
Linux version 3.2.0-4-686-pae

And exactly what distro did you say you were running again? Because that doesn't match the specs of any Debian release I can find.

Release: 8.2
Codename: jessie
I did a reinstall of iceweasel
Mozilla Iceweasel 38.4.0

Is that the information you needed?
When trying to open a file my computer hangs for a about 20 seconds, iceweasel crashes and the pdf opens.
When running from a terminal iceweasel exits with
5040 bus error iceweasel

Interesting, because DistroWatch reports that the kernel in Jessie is 3.16.7 and KDE is version 4.11.13. By implication, you are running a much older kernel and a much later version of KDE. I'd be curious to know how you managed it.

So yeah, post your sources.list file. And be prepared for the problem to be much larger than you currently imagine it to be.

I had to mix repos (madness) because I had a bug in my arc-unzip program, and the testing-repos were said to have that bug fixed. I now commented out the repos and update + upgraded my system.
Same error still

EDIT: Ah, I just now saw you writing an article about that. I use to get myself into debian-related trouble:-)

Same old story. You "just had to" break your system in order to get version X of package Y. The good news is that you get to keep all the pieces.

And your sources.list as shown above is not the whole story. Can't be.

All that tells you is that the damage has already been done.

As I noted above, your FrankenInstall is its own unique monstrosity that does not come anywhere close to any actual Debian release. That means that any errors you encounter are going to be impossible for anyone else to reproduce.

Reinstall Stable from scratch and stop mixing repos.

Allright then. Thanks, I did not know that this was that fatal. Where I got that advice from said it is safe.

just clarifying that Jessie was released with KDE Applications 4.14.2

Code: Select all

kde4-config --version; uname -a; lsb_release -a
Qt: 4.8.6
KDE Development Platform: 4.14.2
kde4-config: 1.0
Linux home 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u6 (2015-11-09) x86_64 GNU/Linux
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Debian
Description: Debian GNU/Linux 8.2 (jessie)
Release: 8.2
Codename: jessie
the confusion comes from the splitting of KDE Applications [4.14.2] and KDE Workspaces [4.11.13]

Thanks for the clarification. I've never seen monolithic middleware that didn't suck, so I'm still clinging stubbornly to my systemd-free Wheezy; so I can only go back what's reported second-hand.

Hi,
I upgraded now to testing. This is some information about my system:
% kde4-config --version; uname -a; lsb_release -a
Qt: 4.8.6
KDE Development Platform: 4.14.2
kde4-config: 1.0
Linux myname 3.2.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.2.65-1+deb7u1 i686 GNU/Linux
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Debian
Description: Debian GNU/Linux testing (stretch)
Release: testing
Codename: stretch

the problem still remains. What shall I do?
Also, when I open a file from icedove, icedove exits too, while the file opens.

I created a new user, when using iceweasel with him it works fine.
Also opening the pdf in-browser works fine too.

all you need to run testing is

Code: Select all

fireexit@stars:~$ inxi -r
Repos: Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
           deb-src http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
           deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
the rest is superfluous and potentially harmful.
  • why you need lenny?
  • and unstable?
above i asked for 3 separate commands, the second should be run as root.

BTW, setting the correct repos, providing the information requested (knowing what is a basic debug command and how it should be used) are tools that you should master before run testing.
there's things one is allowed to learn using a development release, others one must know.
