sources.list, learn how it works then edit it!!!

#1 Post by kustixd »

Hello!

I recently installed Debian 8 on my other computer and wanted to install a driver for wireless. Sadly unsuccessful... So i started browsing for solutions but could not find the final answer. At the moment i need to install build-essential but it seems i can´t connect to the Debian server. And then i tried to apt-get update which was also unsuccessful.
Here is what happens:

Do not try to install or update software on that machine. You have multiple and potentially conflicting repos on your sources.list. Breakage is not only possible, but likely.

Consult the "avoid a broken install" link in my sig for more information. Clean up your sources.list file per the directions in the Debian Wiki. Then run

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade -s
Post the results inside

Code: Select all

 tags[/i].

I just found out what the problem was. I tried to set a static IP for my computer and failed probably, so i set it back to dynamic and stuff is working again. :D

+1 @H_O_A_S
https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian

You have so many things mixed up in the computer, I think your best bet:

Re: Problems with connection?

#6 Post by GarryRicketson »

I recently installed Debian 8 on my other computer and wanted to install a driver for wireless. Sadly unsuccessful
It is easiest if you get the firmware needed ahead of time, and install it when you do the install.

firmware on a usb stick

btw is my sources.list ok?
I don't think it is a real good idea to be mixing "testing" and "stable" sources.
But also what are these ? you show in the first post ?

Code: Select all

 http://ppa.launchpad.net
I certainly wouldn't put that garbage on my computer. But it is your system, you can administer it how ever you want.
After all said and done, read some manuals and documentation, it will save you a lot of trouble in the future.

I do not know what "http://ppa.launchpad.net " is, it came with the update.

Code: Select all

No problem, in that, we all were "new" at one time, there is so much to learn though, it is impossible to explain everything in just 1 post.

No. It. Didn't.

No Debian update would surreptitiously alter the contents of sources.list at all, much less add Ubuntu PPAs. The "mix and match" thread that GarryR pointed you to contains multiple examples of folks who tried to bluff their way through this particular question and failed.

And no, your sources.list is not okay. (Not even the obviously "sanitized" version you posted above.)

I'm not much for repeating myself, so go back and reread my earlier post and follow its directions, or don't come here crying when your system spontaneously fails for "no reason." You'll just be added to the long list of folks in the "mix and match" thread who borked their system by mixing repos.

P.S. Cool facepalm, HoaS. I may have to steal it.

First of all chill. I DON´T KNOW WHAT AM I DOING. Get it? I do not know how to explain how something happens, ok ? Why are you so upset?
And i made some more changes to sources.list

Code: Select all

deb http://ftp.ee.debian.org/debian/ jessie main
deb-src http://ftp.ee.debian.org/debian/ jessie main

deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main

deb http://ftp.ee.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main
deb-src http://ftp.ee.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main

deb http://http.debian.net/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
If it is not as it is supposed to be then just tell me, and thank you in advance. Sorry if i offended you in some way dasein :)

^ Much better but you don't need an extra line for contrib & non-free, just add the components to the existing lines.
https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList#Exa ... 2Jessie.22

Also, comment out (put a "#" symbol at the start) the "deb-src" lines unless you like to compile & patch stuff.

People are irritated 'cos this happens a lot...
;)

EDIT: Just to note: you should probably re-install as whatever you pulled from those PPAs and testing sources may have already wrecked your system.

Basically that is what it boils down to, especially since it appears you have something installed , that tries to use that source :

Code: Select all

http://ppa.launchpad.net

when updates or upgrades are done.
We forgot to mention, as well as

Code: Select all

/etc/apt/sources.list
There is a :

Code: Select all

/etc/apt/sources.list.d/
Look and see if there is anything in that.
Example, I have this, but , I know it is a "trust worthy" package, and when I installed it, the package asked me permission to add the source, for installation, updates and upgrades. I gave it permission.
Example:

Code: Select all

cd /etc/apt
garry@debian:/etc/apt$ ls
apt.conf.d preferences.d sources.list.d trusted.gpg
listchanges.conf sources.list sources.list.save trusted.gpg~
output.txt sources.list~ trustdb.gpg trusted.gpg.d
garry@debian:/etc/apt$ cd sources.list.d
garry@debian:/etc/apt/sources.list.d$ ls
ajenti.list
garry@debian:/etc/apt/sources.list.d$ less ajenti.list
deb http://repo.ajenti.org/debian main main debian
Sometimes, if and when you can not find a type of software, or package in the Debian Repos, you have no choice but to find them else where, and that is ok, BUT , that is when one needs to really be careful, as the what they install and where they get it. Installing packages or software from non-debian sources, is not something a "newbie" or beginner should do. After the "newuser" has read enough documentation, ,etc. they understand what they need to know, to be sure to do this safely.
A good "book" to read:

Can't speak for anyone else, but this people is irritated because:
  • (a) yeah, this happens a lot... and

    (b) there are over 10,000 links in this forum telling folks not to do this (or showing what happens if they do)... and

    (c) "No, I didn't add no PPAs, honest. I swear, it just happened/came with the update!" is pure BS, and the poster damn well knows that it is. If someone is going to ask me to provide them free (gratis) support, they can at a bare minimum do me the courtesy of not lying to me.
But like I said, that's just me.

Not really, it is "irritating", it makes me sad, when I think about how much work and time people have put into writing and maintaining things like the "Debian Wiki", manuals, etc. and it does sometimes seem like nobody bothers to use them,.. :(
It also depends on what kind of mood I'm in :D
If that is the case then i think i should reinstall
Just a little more, If everything is working on now, then you probably do not need to re-install immediately.
I just found out what the problem was. I tried to set a static IP for my computer and failed probably, so i set it back to dynamic and stuff is working again.
Probably as long as you do not try doing any updates or upgrades, everything will keep working for "who knows how long", This gives you plenty of opportunity to copy and save any data that is important to you, IE: videos, images, etc.
Actual "back up", wont't be much use, you would not want to make a complete "back up", then re-install the same "mixed up" system over again.
In a nutshell, do what you need to, to have everything you want saved, and be prepared for a "crash", if and when that occurs, then you will be better off doing a fresh install, but it will be no big deal, you have everything you want to save, saved. It must be on a separate device or medium, like a USB stick, or you can put the stuff on a CD/DVD.
Probably you have a program of some sort, that need this :

Code: Select all

  http://ppa.launchpad.net

You may want to try to find out more on that, what it is, where you got it etc.
There may be something similar available in the Debian repos.
My kid made a mess of his system , downloading some games he wanted,.. but that is another subject.

Strongly disagree. Installing software from "out-of-bounds" leaves the system in an indeterminate and unpredictable state. Said system may start to exhibit odd and unreproducible behavior, whether immediately or eventually. What was it that one guy said? Something like, "My system isn't broken. It just keeps mutating!"

Then the in-duh-vidual comes here and starts a thread that goes on for pages but goes nowhere, because, of course, each FrankenDebian is unique, and so are its "problems." Particularly when a poster has already shown him/herself willing to lie about adding foreign repos, the best thing that can be said about such ratholes is that they divert time, attention, and expertise away from people who have genuine (and fixable) problems.

Mixing repos means reinstall. It's just that simple.

But that's just me.

I also said> In a nutshell, do what you need to, to have everything you want saved, and be prepared for a "crash", if and when that occurs, then you will be better off doing a fresh install
But you are right Dasein, it is better to do the re-install, then to waste time, and effort trying to keep something working, that is not going to keep working.
In other words, get rid of the "time bomb" before it explodes.
And remember in the original "Frankenstein" the "monster" turned on it;s creator.
But any way, what I was trying to say, if his system is working, no need to "panic", the OP has the opportunity to copy and save what they need to before the do the re-install.
In fact, this (copy and save) is probably something that should be done before the machine is shutdown, it is usually when you re-boot next, that the damage reveals itself , it will not boot, and by then it may be to late to get any of the data.
