network-manager-gnome

Postby nopposan » 2007-02-18 21:36

I've installed the gnome frontend for NetworkManager but I really don't know how to call it from the command line. It wasn't automatically added to my Xfce menu.

How do I call it from the command line?

It doesn`t show on my panel though. When i run it with my normal user i get this output:
** (nm-applet:3379): WARNING **: <WARNING> nma_dbus_init (): nma_dbus_init() could not acquire its service. dbus_bus_acquire_service() says: 'Connection ":1.11" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo" due to security policies in the configuration file'

When i try to run it as superuser it shows on the panel and i get no output. How do i run it as normal user? As i see it says that the problem is the security policy in the configuration file but i don`t know where is this configuration file.

sorry

I'm sorry, I've given up on it as I decided not to use it. However, it may be a problem with sudo; you can try giving yourself permissions by using visudo to edit /etc/sudoers adding a line like:
yourusername ALL = (ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/nm-tool

at the end.

I haven't tried it though.

I call it with --sm-disable as well, but is it possible you need session management enabled on your machine? What happens with just nm-applet.

Also, if you're having trouble with the applet detecting networks try commenting everything but your lo out in /etc/network/interfaces.

Seriously.

You may need to restart network manager after you change the file but it should work.

I solved this problem on my PC with this:
1/ Add myself to netdev group
2/ Add/Enable nm-applet --sm-disable in Desktop->Preferences->Sessions|Startup Programs
3/ Logged out all sessions of myself and logged-in back

Voilà, Hope this will help a little :)

I should have read README.debian:
network-manager-gnome (by virtue of the fact it uses network-manager)
requires users to be in the group 'netdev' for it to work. If users aren't
in the group 'netdev' then it won't automatically appear, and work, in the
Notification Area.

After i added my user to the netdev group it worked withoud problem. Then added nm-applet --sm-disable to my session. Now it starts automatically at login and works perfectly (both with wired and wireless connections).
