How low can you go

#1 Post by oswaldkelso »

This is just for fun!

Following derailing this thread http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? ... &start=975 and in the past the other " what does you desktop look like" thread with this topic. I though I'd better start a new one. Actually that was MeanDeans fault

The criteria I used was.

A window manager and file manager a panel and a terminal. For me at least, the lowest capable with gtk2, gtk3, QT3, QT4 etc would be interesting.

My Current Debian (netinst/stable) stats:

-Packages installed- 516

Code: Select all

dpkg -l|grep ^ii|wc -l
-boot startup- /systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 2.723s (kernel) + 6.601s (userspace) = 9.324s

-tty1- /xserver
25MB

-startx- /exec spectrwm (Window Manager) launched
31MB

-Idle-
33MB

-URxvt-
38MB

-File Manager-
55MB

-Browser-
88MB

-Busy- up to 150/300MB Mem usage, depending on the apps and services.
I refuse to watch 400+MB in use :)

I only use CLI (75%) and GTK2 (25%) apps.
Mainly those who are on my signature. Also i use my all time fav txt editor nano.

^day, this is not a "show desktop thread" we've already two thread for this.
Please post some outputs... What have you done tweaking your system, how much RAM/CPU it use clean or busy.

You seems to have customized very good your OS but without outputs, We look no particulars details.

How about using ps_mem? or top command line

Code: Select all

top -b -n1 > top.txt
then bring the output here using code tag

Code: Select all
text output
That image shows the memory usage reported by ps_mem: 24.7M (xmms+vnc+hexchat)
I made a very detailed hungarian howto a year ago: http://flerp.hu/debian/fujitsu/fujitsu.html (use online translate! :-> )

So, i followed the rules, and here you are the terminal + file manager + panel in 8.5 MiB.

WOW just WOW

Actually i thought after saw 24MB above but i believed it was impossible with so many apps open.
Thanks for posting the dirty tweaks... Oh yes i'm going to check your how to... Many thanks for posting.

Personally have not ever come down below the 25MB with systemd. So i can't beat it (surrender /on)
I not deny, this is my first time i saw so less ram usage and so many apps running...

By now you've put a standard :)

@day: that system appears to be based on Debian woody which lost support 10 years ago

Can you reproduce your desktop with a supported version of Debian and re-post the results please?

I would also request separate 32-bit and 64-bit categories.

My amd64 entry is http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=620815#p620815 but I'm cooking up a lighter sid version...

iirc there was no pulse audio in woody :P

Albe it the translation was a bit dodgy

Edit: 32 bit, 64 bit, systemd, non systemd, gtk2, gtk3, tk3, qt4,qt5 fltk etc etc

The whole point of the thread is to understand how memory use affects computer performance and what are the benefits and losses associated with those choices.

Brilliant and thanks for the how to and links.

I see icewm has jumped up from 1.1 to 2MB so much as it pains me to say it, I think you get get that down even more . If only we could get a modern browser down in size.

I think it's called more bang for your buck! Forgive the translation form days link
Icewm modest by comparison only with 2megát and alone by the window manager and the panel as well. You may even find a small userunfriendly window managers (eg. Suckless DWM), but I pulled a convenience minimum. Icewm can handle virtualdesktopot, hotkeys can be set (eg screenshots, multimedia keys.), Theme-ezhető (circa hundred here, if you want to choose from: http://box-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode= 7311 - made to date) window film can be grouped according to (always on top), menu, hours, system monitor on the panel. Even Systray to be treated, if that's what you need (icewm-tray, 800KB +) or background may be (icewm-bg, + 800K).

Maybe a little harsh. I have always liked JWM. Only a little bit smaller, but smaller.

user unfriendly... maybe DWM is unfriendly to those who aren't willing to learn a few basic keybindings before starting, but it's really not any more difficult than most tiling WMs.
