Can't launch installer for Jenny from Hirens G-parted

#1 Post by leemidi »

HEY! I'm stupid - let's get that out of the way first. Here's my deal - probably something really ignorant but I've looked thru multitudes of pages - google & wiki to no avail.?.?...

I'm running from Gparted off a boot from Hirens disc on an Asus laptop that's got Win7 Ultimate 64bit installed on the 1st (Primary) partition NTFS. I've created a separate partition 300Gb+ formatted with EXT4.
I've downloaded Jenny amd32-64 combo ISO & haved moved it to the 2nd partition EXT4 & expanded it. I want to run a dual-boot with an option to choose Win7 or Linux at start-up & utilize the GTK giu with Linux.
For some reason I can't get the install to initialize. I can't see the partition in Windows & when I've tried to run Lilo utility from Gparted none of the options are available... What's up with my procedure.
I would appreciate any hand-holding - I have set-up & run MacBuntu as well as Ubuntu, on a Windows laptop, before so I'm not totally ignorant but certainly not proficient. leemidi@gmail.com

Is "Jenny" a typo for Jessie?? Or is it something else entirely?

Plus, you might want to remove your email address from your post.

DASEIN - YES, I was reading the GoogleDocs beginner's guide & it was based on LENNY so I got all dyslexic when I wrote the post, even though I was looking at JESSIE the LENNY thing stuck & I wrote JENNY... sheesh
I'm OK with the email address being public - I use it when I post on forums & do get some spam as a result but often-times I get replies back to the email directly, some people apparently don't like posting on the forum.?.?... Hey, do you have any Idea what the heck I'm doing wrong? I also tried to use the GRUB1 tool to add an option to start LINUX but the (hidden) partition that the bootloader dir is in isn't available to me in Gparted & I wasn't sure how to do it in Windows (which is my 2nd computer 'language' BTW - YES, you guessed it - I'm a MAC GUY... ;-) Anyhooo, any help would be appreciated. TIA leemidi

Did you try this :
How to install Debian as a dual boot system

Down at the bottom of this are instruction for installing grub on a dual boot
system, https://debian-handbook.info/browse/sta ... steps.html

There is also : https://wiki.debian.org/WindowsDualBoot

Pre-Partitioning for Multi-Boot Systems
I'm running from Gparted off a boot from Hirens disc
I don't know, about that, I am familiar with "Hirens Boot Cd's" and
he does excellent work, back when I was using Dos , I communicated
with him often, and he is very help full, but I have no idea about using
that to install Debian, I all ways just use the Debian Live images, and
a Live CD made myself, it does use gparted as well. You might be
better off asking Hiren himself about using his CD.
I was reading the GoogleDocs beginner's guide & it was based on LENNY

This probably is the source of most of your problems, you should use the Debian documentation, and Lenny is very outdated, also "lilo" is rather deprecated, but it still
can be used.
It is not really clear on that, if you are going to use grub or lilo,
These may help you decide, and it has many more links , on both
using grub, or lilo .

You are welcome, and if you still have problems
feel free to ask, I think though you may be able to get it worked out
with some better documentation.

HEY GARRY! First off, let me thank you again for the resources.
I looked around & went for the "Goodbye-Microsoft" Debian installer.
Made it successfully all the way to install from a ISO on local hard-drive but
it keeps sending me back to the PARTITION TOOL telling me it can't write to
that partition - which I had originally set-up with Gparted as a 300+Gb EXT4
partition (I have Win7 on the other half of the drive in it's own NTFS partition).
I fear that because I downloaded the amd64&32combo Deb8.5 to that partition,
the same one I'm trying to install @ / (/root with Graphical User Interface) that
it may not be able to read & write to the same partition at the same time)...?
Another ODD thing I noticed was that when I scanned the drive for ISO's it shows
up correctly named but with '(FIXME)' following the title of the ISO - what's that
about? I've been through all of the options in PARTITION but nothing there seems
to be about 'initializing the partition map' which is one of the possible errors I get.
Spent all afternoon trying the different steps & everything EXCEPT the touchpad
works as it should - but that doesn't even work well in Win7 - WAY TO0 SENSITIVE!
So, LONG story SHORT - anything you can think of that I can do to avoid aborting
the install would be greatly, & I mean GREATLY! appreciated. ThankYou again...

Did you look at this ? : http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/installmanual

I am having a hard time understanding exactly what you are doing,..
For one, I guess I should have mentioned this,. ... I do not use Windows, and never
have, so I don't know, about all these things you are trying to use.
You must have a good "Live CD" or Live USB device, that has a partitioning tool on
it, you must be able Unmount the partition, before you can do anything with
it. On linux,
The command,is 'umount' , not unmount,

Code: Select all

umount
==
-

Code: Select all

man umount
If you are using Windows, or trying to do this from Windows, I do not know.
I do not Know about this "good bye windows.com" I do see it mentioned on the wiki,
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Loader

But I have never tried to install Debian that way,... I do not see how it would be possible. You would probably be better off useing :
https://www.debian.org/CD/live/
Download the ISO image you want, burn it to a CD, use the CD or DVD to boot with,
then install Debian to the partition you want......Read the documentation carefully first
though, the live CD will include "gparted" , a partitioning tool, and "fdisk", you can work
on the partitions from that.
I am not the best person to be trying to help, when I get a new (new to me,but used)
computer, I do not worry about keeping Windows, it is of no use to me, so I simply
boot the computer with a "Live CD", format the entire HD, I usually set up 4 primary
partitions, this is because I not only use Debian Wheezy, but also, Debian Squeez, and
I keep a DOS partition, another, I use for another linux distro, I like,...but it is all Linux,
and since Linux is such a user friendly system, it is very easy to do that, formating, resizing, ..etc,... the grub boot loader , detects the partitions, and at the end of the install, when grub is installed, it updates it'self and all the partititions work and boot.
With Windows, I do not know, and I do not know about NTFS, and all that, so that is
why your post does not make any sense to me.
How ever, I will say, on this computer, it is a Older Del, Desktop,
it had window 7 on it, I have not really ever used it, but I decided when I installed
Debian Wheezy (Debian 7), I decided to see if I could keep the Windows 7,..so
First I booted with MY Live CD, (Debian Squeeze), then I used gparted, to resize
the first partitions, that were all Windows, they were 2 partitions,
1 100mb, system
and the other took up
the rest of the HD, 670+ GB,
I resized that 1 reduced it to 34.18 gb, just a little more
then what the minimum size could be, then I checked, to make
sure, if it would even still boot, and it did.
So I then , shutdown the computer, boot again using
my live cd, ... I had over 660 gb, unallocated disk space,
available, I created 2 more primary partitions, formated
them , with ext4,... installed, MX14 on the smaller one,
34 gb, rebooted. and checked , the MX14 booted just
fine, also, the windows partition was still bootable, they both
showed in my grub menu,
After that, I shutdown the PC again, booted with my
Debian Wheezy, Live CD, and installed Debian wheezy, to
the remaining 629 gb. partition, when it got to the part where
it was ready to install grub, the instructions were clear about
that I had other partitions, and if I installed grub to this one,
the others might not boot, etc,...I do not remember exactly
but the instructions were clear enough on that, but it did
take some careful reading and thought, to decide where
to install grub, I really do not remember where, I choose, but it was
the one grub suggested, it installed, and then updated, and all the partitions
boot just fine, including the Windows 7 one, all though I never use it.
For what ever it is worth,

Code: Select all

garry@debian:~$ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 698.7G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 100M 0 part
├─sda2 8:2 0 34.2G 0 part
├─sda3 8:3 0 34.4G 0 part
└─sda4 8:4 0 630G 0 part /

Sda4 , is Debian Wheezy, my main system, and first choice in the grub menu,
sda1 and 2 is the Windows 7, the last choice in my grub menu,
sda3 is MX14, another distro, I use a little,.... it is based on Wheezy,
It is a different computer, a laptop where I have Debian Squeeze, but that
really is not relevant here,....
And just to confuse you even more, here is what I have , with the external USB HD
connected,...

Code: Select all

garry@debian:~$ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 698.7G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 100M 0 part
├─sda2 8:2 0 34.2G 0 part
├─sda3 8:3 0 34.4G 0 part
└─sda4 8:4 0 630G 0 part /
sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 rom
sdc 8:32 0 931.5G 0 disk
├─sdc1 8:33 0 337.3G 0 part /media/e1980294-7c37-4fda-b0a9-ba5a9489bc88
├─sdc2 8:34 0 1K 0 part
├─sdc3 8:35 0 50.7G 0 part /media/rootMX
├─sdc4 8:36 0 34.2G 0 part /media/44d5a5e7-87ac-45dc-bb3a-7ea83d67c4d6
├─sdc5 8:37 0 39G 0 part /media/502a8cb6-bd77-4a3f-a041-3c26306d840f
├─sdc6 8:38 0 4.7G 0 part
└─sdc7 8:39 0 465.8G 0 part /media/home

Everything that is supposed to be bootable, does boot.
But I have no clue as to how one would go about doing this using things, like "hirens"
Live CD, and "goodby-windows",... etc,...
The only way, I know, is reading the documentation, and also partitioning tutorials,
and using a good Linux, live CD, that has partitioning tools.
When I did use Hirens "boot CD", it was way back, when he first started making
them, and primarily for Dos, it did not have any linux or unix tools, to speak of , and
it only had a little but for Windows, windows 98 ( I think), again , I never used that
part of it,..and do not remember.

Any way to sum it up, I think you would be better off just downloading a good Debian Live ISO, and use that to do your partitioning, and installation.
Maybe someone else here, will be able to add some suggestions, on the things your using, maybe there is some one that has used those methods,,..sorry I couldn't be of more help.

GARRY - HEY! Thanks so Much!
I've got a sneaky suspicion that the EXT4 partition is MOUNTED.
AND that is why the installer doesn't have the ability to modify it.
NOW I need to figure out a way to get to the XTERM program so I
can unmount it "umount" or "man umount" & then go back to the
installer & PARTITION TOOL to see what options that opens up for
me. I think possibly copying the ISO from the EXT4 partition to a
USB drive would possibly also give me another possible option.
hmmmm....
FWIW - I really am not a Windoze user, MacGuy here ;-) but on
occasion I do need to use a WinApp, that's the ONLY reason I'm
keeping it on the box.
Thank You & I'll update you on my progress after I try these options.

I need to figure out a way to get to the XTERM program
<ctrl-alt-f1>
will start a terminal window, I all ways have a hard time remembering how to close it though, doing it that way.
If you are using a Debian Live CD, in the "aplications">system tools> xterm
there should be a menu option to start it as well,

<ctrl-alt-f1>
will start a terminal window,
If you don't mind, I think the terminology should be that "<ctrl-alt-f1> shifts the console to virtual terminal 1", which is away from virtual terminal 7 as being the one wherein X usually runs.

The deal is that the system has some few virtual terminals to act as "the console", and usually the key combination <ctrl-alt-fN> will move the console focus to virtual terminal N. Almost equally usually vt1 through vt6 are tied to getty programs, i.e., console login, and vt7 is for X. And if you run a second X server, it'll tend to bind to vt8. In days past, vt9 was used for presenting dmesg, but that's rarely the case nowadays.

Thus, in short: you'll switch back to X with <ctrl-alt-f7>.

I don't quite understand what you are trying to do either. You can't install from an ISO on the same partition you wish to install to.
Do it the way described in the Debian manual or wiki. Make a bootable DVD or USB, boot and install from that. Note the live CD mentioned will not install to a UEFI system.

I have not read all the posts in this thread, thus I may be wrong. If so, excuse me.

To leemidi,

During installation of debian, you can get to tty2 by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F2. Press Enter key to enable it.
But I wonder if you try to install debian by a hard way.
If debian installer can connect to internet on your Asus laptop, by-far easier way to install debian on your Asus laptop may be the following.

1) Confirm a grub2 tool can boot linux kernel on your Asus laptop
One of possible candidates is Super Grub2 Disk, which can be downloaded at http://www.supergrubdisk.org/super-grub2-disk/

2) Put netinst kernel and initramfs files into any partition (whose filesystem can be recognized by the grub2 tool such as Super Grub2 Disk) on your Asus laptop.
For example, download http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/stab ... md64/linux and http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/stab ... /initrd.gz .
Put them into the EXT4 partition.

3) Boot with the Grub2 tool and boot the kernel for using the initramfs
For example, boot with Super Grub2 Disk and enter into command line mode (if possible, although it may be impossible) by pressing c key and execute

Code: Select all

set root=(hd0,gpt2)
linux /linux
initrd /initrd.gz
boot
You should replace "hd0,gpt2" with the proper letters. You may be able to find the proper letters by executing

Code: Select all

ls
Openbox, JWM: Jessie, Sid, Arch / Win XP (on VirtualBox), 10
