I have never done this before, at least on a real "live" server.
I rented a dedicated server recently, some thing I have thought about for a
long time, but for various reasons never did. But just recently I decided to give
it a try.
It turned out to be a little bit more complicated then I expected. However now,
I finally got it working.
The thing of it is, the service that offers the servers is very economical, how ever
it is not like a "hosting" service, where they have support, and everything is basically
"one click" and install.
The only "support" they have is, if and when the HD fails, they replace it with another,
and install the OS the client chooses. In my case, I had them install Debian Wheezy.
After it was installed, I needed to do the rest, install mysql, etc, and the web server.
It is non-commercial, mostly for a learning experience.
I had to do a lot of searches, and reading , studying , and trial by error, especially with
the "mysql" part and installing the phpBB forum. But any way, it does go to show, the
information on how to do this is available, and can be found doing searches, and
following, reading carefully the instructions.

============================Off topic ===============================
The reason for the name "El Chanate", is a long story, "chanate" is a common bird here in Mexico, also known as the "broad tailed grackle", about a month ago, my niece
found one that had fallen out of it's nest, and I took care of it, feeding it with a syringe, at first, then as it grew, more solid food, it does not live in a cage, it now lives in a tree,
still pretty young, and I still have to give it food, but any way it is turning out to be a wonderful pet,...but any way, that is another subject, and story,... but that is why I choose
the name, believe it or not, the chanate helped me figure out some things , when I could
not find the answers doing searches. They are extremely intelligent ,logical, and wise
birds.

Good effort Garry, very inspiring
Can I test your server security please?
I have always fancied myself as a l33t Kali H4xx0r

there are all sorts of "nasties", trying access it .

Re: Debian Wheezy server
Nice work! I have a similar setup (landing page/forum) on a digital ocean droplet here: https://blackhillstechgroup.org. I recently switched the landing page from Concrete5 to a simple WordPress setup. Basically no traffic, but definitely a great learning exercise!
Something that may be of interest to you, is Pelican: http://blog.getpelican.com/. It's written in python, and basically generates websites from a theme and markdown files (or restructured text.) It's the same thing that powers bits from debian: https://bits.debian.org/

Thank you,
That is a beautiful scene you have on there.
The Pelican software sounds interesting, I do like how the "bits from debian"
looks and is laid out as well.

Re: Debian Wheezy server
pretty nice, although the image on garry's site loads a bit slow for me over here at the other side oth the planet. i wonder why everyone wants to use phpbb especially with sites that have only a few posts a week. is it somehow difficult to maintain a discourse forum? is it the php? in case you don't know what Discourse is:

Re: Debian Wheezy server
I don't know on that. But any way, a discussion on what forum software is best,
is not really what I had in mind when I started this thread.
So anyway, the Debian Wheezy server is working fine, my next step was to migrate
the Debian-spanish forum, from my old hosting, to it's new home,..
Same url, but now it is on a Debian server, and not Ubuntu, which is what the old hosting used, ....
Now I have successfully migrated everything, including the DNS A records,
so now the
Debian Foro Español
is hosted on a Debian Wheezy server, instead of a Ubuntu server.
And using phpBB,
the same as it was before.
