oh no! Something has gone wrong

#1 Post by Tigres »

Hello friends I have a new problem
I am debian 8 user, I had this nano/sources/list with more or less this configuration

# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.2.0 _Jessie_ - Official Multi-architecture amd64/i386 NETINST #1 ]/ jessie main

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.2.0 _Jessie_ - Official Multi-architecture amd64/i386 NETINST #1 ]/ jessie main

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie main non-free contrib
deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free

I changed the configuration to this because I don remember well:

deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie-updates main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free

and also I edited backports following the instructions here : https://wiki.debian.org/Backports

replace backports.org with http://httpredir.debian.org/debian in /etc/apt/sources.list*.

run aptitude update
1. remove the backports.org key from your keyring. Depending how you installed it...

2. apt-get purge debian-backports-keyring
or

3. apt-key del 16BA136C

Them I
apt-get update -y && apt-get upgrade -y

Them I reboot the machine, and after that the machine was rebooting normally, but I got this message on the screen:

A sad Face (icon)
oh no! Something has gone wrong
A problvem has occurred and the system cant recover. Please contact a system administrator.

Can yo help me please

Restore from backup, and don't install everything willy-nilly from backports next time.

Them I reboot the machine, and after that the machine was rebooting normally, but I got this message on the screen:
Probably some apt issue that cannot be corrected automatically. Open a terminal, run "sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get upgrade"

DO NOT proceed from there, just copy-paste the output here then press ctrl-c.

Hello friends, again I got in trouble again.
Well according with your suggestion I tried to backup and restore the debian system with a tool called Redo(back and recovery), But when I realized i did not have enought space to back up on the laptop, even I don't have any other hard disk. Because the size of the back up was 95 Gb aprox. ( do I am wron?g or just I need to backup the system is that size aprox.?)

Well, on the original configuration(old): I had dual boot in an acer laptop 250 GB ,In Grub I had 1) Debian 8 2) windows 7
and using ( the Partition tool editor) it looked liked more or less:
dev/sda1 ext 4 100 GB ( for linux debian) (free memory 20 GB)
dev/sda2 ntfs 200 MB
dev/sda3 swap 4GB (swap memory)
dev/sda4 ntfs 140 GB ( windows) (free memory 40 GB)

Well the fact is that I changed the idea and I tried to make a new installation of debian from 0 with graphical installation, so I burned a CD an I got debian 8.5, welll I have always installed debian well them passed to all the steps, like:(language, hostname, username, root password, user password, setting the clock , but When I arrived to the point ofPartition disk , it detected the 240 GB , it was ok, but at this point I thought I was going to see this:
dev/sda1 ext 4 100 GB ( for linux debian) (free memory 20 GB)
dev/sda2 ntfs 200 MB
dev/sda3 swap 4GB (swap memory)
dev/sda4 ntfs 140 GB ( windows) (free memory 40 GB)

so in that way I could replace the sda1 and formatting it and make a new installation on that partition, so I thought i could kept the windows and the other configurations

But instead on the menu:
Partition disk, where I saw the menu:
Guided-use entire disk
Guided-use entire disk and setup LVM
Guided-use entire disk and setup encrypted LVM
Manual
so I selected the option Manual, but I saw this:

Guided partitioning
Configure software RAID
Configure........... LVM ...
........................................

LVM VG usuarex2-vg, LV home - 233.1 GB Linux device-mapper (linear)
> 1 233.1 GB
LVM VG usuarex2-vg, LV root - 9.0 GB Linux device-mapper (linear)
> 1 9.0 GB
LVM VG usuarex2-vg, LV swaap_1 - 4.3 GB Linux device-mapper (linear)
> 1 4.3 GB
LVM VG usuarex2-vg, LV tmp - 398.5MB GB Linux device-mapper (linear)
> 1 398.5MB
LVM VG usuarex2-vg, LV var - 3.0GB Linux device-mapper (linear)
> 1 3.0GB
SCSI1(0,0,0)(SDA) 250gb ATA WDC ############
> # 1 PRIMARY 254.8 MB ext 4
> # 5 logical 249.8 GB K lvm

but them I did not select anything on this step, practically nothing even no ( no formatting , no erasing anything), at this point I quit the installation I turned off the laptop, and restart without the burned new CD., and I saw just a black screeen.
so at this point Can I return to the old configuration or is so late?, I mean can I still use the redo tool to back up and restore the debian 8 old system or no, well now I can free space almost 100 gb, I dont care about the data but I need to restore the old configuration, do you have any idea?, what do you day?

Tigres, forget about that.
save your personal data, and reinstall debian from scratch, and "don't install everything willy-nilly from backports next time".

Hllo friends
Like someone said:
¨save your personal data, and reinstall debian from scratch, and "don't install everything willy-nilly from backports next time".

does it mean that things that are in backports ar no officials, no trustfull?, dos it mean that can someone sequest my computer or hacked me?

Well thank you I resolved the problem installing evrything from 0., But this should not be.

No, that is not what it means, but what it does mean is that you should read the
documentation carefully before using them, and be more thought full about
how you do things.
https://backports.debian.org/Instructions/
===========
https://wiki.debian.org/Backports
It is recommended to pick out single backports which fit your needs, and not to use all backports available.
And if you use these keywords:

Code: Select all

How to use Debian Backports safely
You will find a lot more good documentation on the subject.

Ok. Now I am remembering what could happened , because like I explained lines on the first explanation of the problem, after editing the backports

("and also I edited backports following the instructions here : https://wiki.debian.org/Backports

replace backports.org with http://httpredir.debian.org/debian in /etc/apt/sources.list*.")

the I runned apt-get update apt-get upgrade commands, in some part of the process I saw this:

0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 4 not upgraded.
Need to get 10.7 kB of archives.
After this operation, 25.6 kB of additional disk space will be used.
WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated!
deb-multimedia-keyring
Install these packages without verification? [y/N] y
I pressed Y, so it means that for the next installation some packages need to be authenticated first?, I should answer N., what it means authenticated, that are no officials?

Well The problem is solved, I will read more
Thanks

You are still leaving out critical information, and we have to try and figure out what you're doing from clues, such as the deb-nultimedia-keyring package. That means you added the deb-multimedia repository, which is not mentioned in the backports.org instructions, and is not an official Debian repository. Many of its packages have been known in the past to break Debian multimedia functionality, especially if the user "upgraded" everything from there.

Please don't leave out that kind of information. We should have asked to see what your sources.list file was at the start; that what's almost always to blame--so what's the real contents of that file?

Just comment out those deb-multimedia lines by putting a hash in front of them, like:

Code: Select all

#deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org jessie main
Only enable them if you really need something from there that's not in the Debian repository, and then only with caution. Ask here if you have questions about a package from there. It's a bad idea to leave it and jessie-backports always enabled. The mozilla jessie-backports you have in your list is considered safe to leave enabled, though.

The multimedia repo is known for conflicts with the official repo's packages. I know it first hand when i installed stuff from it and reverting to the official packages was a major pain in the rear.

No, those are just duplicates (mirrors) of the main Jessie repository, which only has the 3.16 kernel. It only gets security updates to that kernel version. If you want a newer version overall, there's up to a 4.6 kernel in jessie-backports. If your 3.16 kernel is working well, generally there's no good reason to add a newer kernel except if you want to experiment with it (still a good reason, though :) )
