Update with a little foot-in-mouth, lol...

It seems the Radeon VCE error is supposedly harmless so I installed kernel 4.4.16 in PCLOS (Bill is still a 8==D for abandoning LTS kernels in his repo after he gets bored with them). Anyway, VCE stands for 'Video Coding Engine', and apparently my vanilla R7 250 vid card doesn't support VCE, so basically the kernel thinks my card supports it, attempts to load the driver for it, resulting in the error, which apparently is harmless and should be ignored. I ran a bunch of video tests just to make sure, every thing worked fine. Case closed Sherlock, lol.

Here's a list of kernels and their EOL dates, I try to go with the late as possible kernel EOL dates. I'm way past the bleeding edge tester phase, I'm OK with fairly recent but reliable.

Edit: The 4.4.x kernel has far more features (i.e. tons of different file systems and hardware support, etc) than the 3.x series, waaaaaaay more.

I'm schtickin' with 3.16 in my Devuan install, it runs good and I'm tired of dealing with backports. PCLOS and my netinst despywared Ubuntu Xfce (it's NOT Xubuntu) 14.04.5 are keeping the 4.4 kernels, Canonical is supporting their 4.4 until 2021, I believe. The Ubuntu install is just a backup OS, in case PCLOS and/or Devuan go under.

Fun fact, running the same video stress tests in Devuan made my GPU hit 52C, in comparison, in PCLOS with the 4.4 kernel, it ran much cooler, low 40C's. I'm guessing because es2gears runs full blast in Devuan (about 770fps), where as glxgears runs throttled to the monitor parameters in PCLOS (about 60fps), I ran es2gears and glxgears while the other tests were running as well, more stress the better, lol.

If you are replying to Bester, I'm pretty sure that he was referring to the kernel version, not the package/release. That is, that he was using the kernel that kernel.org gave the number 4.7 to and in that context testing is on 4.7.5 now (which is 4.7.0-1 therefore).

But maybe I'm wrong. It is hard to tell, your guys posts are hard to follow. I don't even know if you are replying to some one or not and to whom exactly.

Point releases are normal, and released on a standard schedule. There's always bugs, minor or otherwise, being found and fixed with every point release. Why did you feel the need to publicize this one over all the others?

BTW--the Ubuntu kernel team is not the Debian kernel team, nor the main upstream kernel developers, though nothing keeps them from sharing personnel.

I think differents versions's kernel behave differente in each computer, or, at least i felt that way,

in my case, i recentlly tried 4.7 bpo debian's kernel and 4.8 ubuntu's kernel, and i fell they performance worse than ubuntu's 4.7.6,

this last kernel --> 4.7.6 ubuntu's its working great in my computer, i fell it quicker and smoother, i tried two times others kernel (4.7bpo and 4.

to see if it was placebo, and i feel they both dont performance as well as 4.7.6 ubuntu's in my laptop, so its kind of extrange, my final conclusion is that every kernel behave different in the same computer.

Now, im pretty happy with kernel's ubuntu 4.7.6

Actually they sort of were for a bit:

The Linux 3.16-stable branch will not be maintained as a longterm branch at kernel.org. However, the Ubuntu kernel team will continue to maintain that branch, following the same rules for acceptance and review, until around April 2016. Ben Hutchings is planning to continue maintenance from then until the end of regular support for 'jessie'.

The question is, what gain do you get by using 3.16 kernel insteed of newers or latest kernel?

Bester69, priorities differ. A kernel is much more than performance and driver compatibility. Many uses require extremely well tested kernels.

for regular users??,for critical factory envirovments purposes, or financials computers or maybe even just productions servers companies where there is too much in risk,i understand a driver may failt causing a drop down so you would go for the most tested kernel, but for desktop computer i dont see the point...., ive never seen nothing wrong with any kernel i tried in my computer.

jejej, I recognised ancient/past is better, I always liked vintage, i prefer old movies 70's to 90's, i love ancient furnitures, and i miss ancient clothes and old people behavior and society, I think the best about humanity has gone behind in around 70's-80's but when its about technology i prefer new ones.

, but hey, i also kind of miss those days when we have wait for loading a tape game in the Spectrum 48K.
