[SOLVED] Wifi connection dropping, is there a cure?

I have Debian Jessie (installed from the "hybrid" non-free iso) running on an older Toshiba laptop. It has a Realteck RTL8188CE wireless adapter and an Atheros AR8152 v1.1 ethernet adapter. The problem I'm having is that the wireless connection will drop intermittently and I will have to switch off wifi in the network manager and switch it back on to make it transfer data again, even though it shows the connection is still up. I have done several searches and found many "fixes" which haven't helped the issue. Does anyone know if an actual fix exists?

This was the first response from google
I had similar issues with a RTL8192CE and had to compile my own driver (from a different source) which worked flawlessly afterwards.

This is the one I used for my 8192 card, and it might support 8188 but the readme says it is hit and miss so might not work.

Thanks... I ran through the process in the google link you provided (I had tried a similar suggestion from a different repository). It actually made the connection drop more frequently, thankfully I had a clean clone image to restore so I'm still on the hunt for the cure.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L745 that came with a RTL8192CE mini Wifi card. It drove me nuts for several months dropping connections. Nothing I could do with software helped. In frustration I swapped out the card for one from Intel and it has never dropped a connection since. At that time there were complaints about Toshiba's use of the Realteck card all over the Internet.

Try what you can with different drivers. Maybe they have improved drivers since then but keep in mind that the Realteck card may itself be the problem.

Changing cards may be the next option. I thought about it but wasn't sure if the bios would reject it or not.

Another thought would be to update firmware on your WiFi Router. Not to say the RealTek card isn't the problem here. Also after you update the firmware you might try the guy's compile your own driver suggestion above again.

What is 'wl' doing in there when there are no broadcom devices present? Did you load it manually or is it loading automatically on boot? I suggest removing it by either purging it (if is not needed) or by blacklisting it. As you can see in the quoted part above, it may be creating a conflict for cfg80211 driver.

I have no idea . I didn't load it (could it be from my usb ethernet dongle?). What would be the best way to purge it?

The 'wl' module is for wifi cards, and only PCI ones (from what I can see in modinfo on an old version of it here). So no, it can't be for your Ethernet adapter.

First, check which of the 'broadcom-sta-*' packages is installed -

The installed packages should show up with the line(s) starting with "ii". Once identified (most probably it would be "broadcom-sta-dkms"), purge it with -

# apt-get purge <package name(s)>
Reboot shouldn't be necessary, but if purging it alone doesn't seem to help, go for it.

Purged the broadcom package and the wl driver is no longer showing in lsmod, however, the problem persists.

Falcon_cmh: There are no available updates for the router.

Not to beat a dead horse but how about trying a different router if you have one. I know I have had better success with ASUS routers instead of DLink and Netgear but no matter what router I used I had to get updates to the firmware several times before they worked properly. I know these guys with the latest routers tend to use the same chips like Broadcom. The firmware they were released with was sub-par no matter the mfg when the router first came out. Connection dropping was one of the most prevalent issues. And of course distance is an issue sometimes too but I am sure you know all that. Also some routers work with third party firmware.

bryanmc, is your laptop dropping connections when you are out and about or is this just a problem at home? If it's the latter, falcon_cmh might be right. Tuning a home router should be a must whenever in doubt. If a neighbour is using the same channel as you are you might be competing. Is Your Wireless Connection Dropping? Amazingly, some routers are directional; simply rotating it 90 degrees can make a big difference.

The larger point is that WiFi issues can be difficult-to-impossible to diagnose. There are simply too many variables that can't be controlled (including and in particular RFI).

I haven't had the laptop out of the house to check it. It's dropping the signal 8ft across the room from the router. My wife's win 10 laptop, my mint 18 netbook and various other wifi devices in the house are not having the issue. Running

shows my router on ch1 another on ch3 and another on ch11. The houses in my neighborhood are all on 1/2 acre lots so it's not like an apt building where interference could be an issue.

You have a profoundly misinformed notion of when/how RFI "could" be an issue. Diagnosing WiFi problems is hard enough without you rejecting ideas without testing them.

So you set yours to channel 7 and don't let it move. Stake out your territory, because those other routers are probably switching channels constantly. Also, you should be aware of overlapping coverage, or "blind spots" when routers conflict with each other, no matter what channel they are on. It has to do with the ACK signal from sent packages, there's a wiki page somewhere. can't recall the topic.
