Jessie WiFi not working - Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165

Hi everyone,

I'm new in all this world. I installed Debian Jessie in a new partition in a Windows notebook, and the wireless connection is not working.

Notebook: Lenovo Flex 3 1580
Original OS: Windows 10
Installed OS: Debian Jessie Kernel 3.16.0-4 amd64
Wireless card: Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 / Intel corporation device 3166

I tried a lot of thing and tutorials the last week. I installed the kernel 4.8.12 and finally I reinstalled Debian Jessie kernel 3.16.0

I know you can help me, and tell to community step by step how can we solve this problem together.

You need the kernel & firmware-iwlwifi package from the jessie-backports repositories.

Once the jessie-backports repositories are added, use this command for the firmware:

I did that you tell me with this link https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=1257 and when I reboot, start the grub, and then the screen turn black with a dash. The update kernel in this case 4.7.0-0bpo.1amd4 is not working for me and the 4.8.12 neither.

So now, I need to know How erase the 4.7.0 and return to 3.16.0. And solve the original wifi problem.

Ideas?

There is no need to "erase" anything, the original 3.16 kernel can be selected from the "Advanced Options" GRUB sub-menu.

Lenovo says that machine is using Broadwell Intel graphics (might also have Nvidia discrete GPU), so you should install everything listed in that linked guide. You can check how your graphics are running by installing inxi and checking the output of "inxi -Gx". Gallium and llvmpipe in the output for Intel graphics mean that you don't have the driver working correctly.

Some people on the MX forums with a Lenovo Broadwell machine experienced constant crashes anyway with the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver that cleared up when they switched to the modesetting driver--something to keep in mind.

I know that I change the loader Kerner change it in the grub options, but it is not a correct way. Because it is upset.

So, for the moment we are in the same step. Any idea?

BTW: The graphics is a Nvidia GForce.

I have been thinking to return to the first kernel and only install the drivers that I need for the wireless card. If you know how can I do it, I appreciate if you explain it to me.

Step by Step.
-To set kernel boot options, you must edit your grub configuration. You can do this temporarily for a single boot by entering the grub menu. If you do not get to see the grub boot menu after the bios automatically, you may have to press SHIFT key after the bios logo to get in to grub
-Select the default ubuntu kernel (usually the top one), and rather than pressing enter, press E to edit.
-Press DOWN ARROW until you get to the line that starts with "linux" (with out "") and press END keys to position your cursor at the end of the that line usually ending with “quiet splash” or only with "quiet".
-Now you can type "nomodeset" (with out "")
-press control+X to boot the modified grub entry

Important: setting boot options this way only applies to a single boot. If you reboot the machine, those settings will be lost, unless you make them permanent (see below). Please continue reading the link https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 to see how make permanet this changes.

Following Ubuntu instructions when you really don't understand the difference between Ubuntu and Debian can lead to your install breaking, especially when you use Ubuntu packages instead of the Debian equivalents.

The information I found says your machine has a hybrid graphics system, with low-power-drain integrated Intel graphics plus a discrete Nvidia card. In that case, you should set up Bumblebee per the Debian wiki instead of letting your machine burn through the battery using only the Nvidia GPU.

What does the lspci command say about your graphics hardware?

The battery performance is not good, now and before of all the changes (I'm not talking about Bumblebee). It was better with Windows 10.
My graphic card are:
Intel HD Graphic 520
NVIDIA GeForce 940M

Do you think that Bumblebee works well with GeForce 940M?

Just follow the instructions in the Debian wiki for setting up Bumblebee from the jessie-backports repository. Also install inxi and test

too see if the switching is working. Also, Skylake support is still being worked on in Linux, so battery life is still not going to be as good as in Windows, though installing tlp might help.

This is a shameless plug, but I worked with dolphin_oracle to get the new MX 16 64-bit (Jessie plus backports, not running systemd as default) release to recognize and automatically set up Bumblebee for an Optimus system with just the click of a button. That's great for people that aren't interested in how a system is set up and just want it working out of the box, but Debian demands you actually read and follow instructions (hopefully that are already in the wiki).

Hi everyone... I have the same chipset and recently switched over to PureOS which is made off of the debian kernel. wifi for me is not working however Ethernet and Bluetooth is... can you guys please go over what i can do to fix this i have the unicode files from intel in the firmware folder and ive done modprobe for the iwlwifi etc... nothing is seeming to work however. if you guys could help i would greatly appreciate it. thanks
