I was wondering which version of the Linux kernel will be used in Stretch when it becomes "stable". At the moment it uses the 4.8 series. I would have thought that the 4.9 series was to be used as it will be a LTS kernel.
Does anyone know?

I'm sorry, but that's incorrect. We have some lovely parting gifts for you, though.wizard10000 wrote:I would imagine it'll be 4.9, which was released to Unstable last Thursday.

Re: Kernel in Stretch?
I did read the messages about 4.10, which were circulating back in March last year. However, I seem to remember that it was thought at that time, that 4.10 would be a LTS kernel. I believe it was September before 4.9 was chosen as the next LTS kernel. Debian could have revised the plans since.
Re: Kernel in Stretch?
Digging a bit, it seems that 4.9 has not officially been picked as the next LTS kernel.
Here is what Greg Kroah-Hartman wrote in his blog in September: http://kroah.com/log/blog/2016/09/06/4- ... ts-kernel/
Here is the official kernel release page, which still does not show the next LTS kernel: https://www.kernel.org/category/releases.html

Well, the kernel release page has now been updated and shows that 4.9 is the next LTS kernel: https://www.kernel.org/category/releases.html
Re: Kernel in Stretch?
I was also wondering about this. Especially since, on the mailing list, Ben Hutchings said (IIRC) that he'd rather not maintain a non-LTS kernel again.
And 4.9 - while not announced officially until was it yesterday - was on it's way to be the LTS for a long time anyway since K-H announced that the first one of the year will always be LTS from now on. So, even though it was known/suspected for months (many devs sent stuff to 4.9 with the idea that it will be 4.9) Debian has not made any announcements about not going with 4.10. Taking all this into account, I think that it is very likely that it will be 4.10. It's not like the releasing of Stretch can be rescheduled to an earlier date at this point with any ease. I guess it means 4.10 will need to be maintained by Debian or Ubuntu/Debian or something.
