Solved: After Jessie upgrade I'm unable to start X

#1 Post by BeBoxer »

I upgraded my squeeze system to jessie this morning and it now appears to crash whenever X is started. I can't for the life of me find any logs which might help though. It's pretty boring Intel integrated graphics so I'm kind of surprised it isn't just working. I've got GDM stopped and am just using 'startx' to try and bring X11 up. After printing a few lines to the console the screen goes black and my monitor says it's resizing. After that, nothing. Keyboard is unresponsive. The network connection goes down. I've tried to capture what little output is produced from 'startx' but the file doesn't even seem to be created. With no logging output I don't have a lot to go on. I've done a bunch of reading and research but it's a pretty vague problem to diagnose I know.

Here's the card info and kernel:
$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G965 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
$ uname -a
Linux monolith 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.39-1 (2016-12-30) x86_64 GNU/Linux

Update: I did manage to get the output of startx saved. The log file referenced was created but was empty.

I was able to get Xorg.log.0 to show up by mounting the root filesystem with sync. There's no errors and nothing jumps out. The end of the file is below. kern.log didn't report anything at all at the time. I'm still stumped.

Sorry I misspoke. I upgraded from Wheezy via the normal process. I have an old squeeze system I need to do something with and I got them confused. I've looked at the logs from the upgrade and there is nothing I would consider out of the ordinary.

Please elaborate.

I think you may have made a mistake somewhere but my crystal ball is not working today...

In short:
  • update /etc/apt/sources.list, replacing 'wheezy' with 'jessie'
    apt-get update
    apt-get upgrade
    apt-get dist-upgrade
As part of my debugging I've removed gdm and some gnome packages to rule things out and prevent X from starting automatically. That lets me at least log in on the console without having to go into rescue mode. From there I've been running 'startx' by hand which triggers the crash or hang.

After much struggling with the software it eventually turned out to be a hardware issue. My computer had an ADD-7312-DVI riser card installed. Here are some details: Prolink ADD-7312-DVI. It's basically a DVI riser card. I've had it in the system and it worked fine before so I didn't really suspect it. I probably should have but I didn't. Anyway, with it removed everything seems to work fine. The MB has a VGA out which is more or less just as good for now. I'd head off to file a bug but to be honest I'm not sure which package to report it to. And likely it's an upstream issue. Anyway, thanks for the help.
