Do you use Google Chrome or Chromium?

#1 Post by kcbagr »

With Stretch coming out soon, I'm trying to decide whether I will be installing Chromium or Google Chrome. On Jessie's Chromium, I ran into some irritating bugs that have never been fixed: very slow load time on application start (15 seconds or more for the Chromium icon to appear in the Gnome launcher), and bugginess when trying to set Chromium as the Default web-browser. Google Chrome has neither of these bugs.

Google Chrome seems to be wanting to FORCE users to have DRM and Native Client and Flash Player enabled on their systems (removing the ability to disable these plugins recently). Since I have no desire for DRM and Flash etc, I like that Chromium doesn't have these.

The primary advantage of Google Chrome as I see it is fast updates. This would be especially true if Stretch fixes the above mentioned bugs in Jessie's Chromium. Chromium is usually two weeks behind Google Chrome's release. The update importance is for security bug fixes.

What do you all prefer?

Neither.

Poll is flawed.

Google Chrome has been more reliable for you?

The symlinks would require that Google Chrome be installed though, right? What is done on boxes where only Chromium is installed?

I use Firefox which I would've preferred to have gone on as Iceweasel but I sometimes use Chromium; I wouldn't contaminate my pure Debian system with the other.
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

alternativeto.net lists 42 Linux alternatives to Google Chrome https://alternativeto.net/software/goog ... form=linux

Some are "based on" Google Chrome. Anyone using the likes of Yandex Browser or SRWare Iron?

To some extent Google Chrome phones home. It creates unique user IDs and sends URIs to Google for search hint and marketing. As far as I know, Chromium doesn't - unless anyone can show that I am wrong.

Just stop it! This thread is not a statement on whether one browser is better than another. It is intended for those people who use Chrome or Chromium. Others need not reply.

C. None of the above

I don't use a browser locked into DRM.

And not a fan of chromium as the devs don't take Debian Stable seriously. Wheezy chromium hit end-of-life/no security support in January 2015 months before jessie went stable. You either had to move from stable (wheezy) to testing (jessie) before it was ready; download and use Chrome; or move to another browser. Those of us who 1) used chromium, 2) only use stable, and 3) use the year overlap between stable and oldstable to transition systems were hung out to dry.

Save for a single post, no one has mentioned a non-Chrome derived browser - so this is certainly not a discussion about which non-Chrome browser might be better.

This is a Debian forum where discussing Debian issues including the DFSG and release stability is entirely relevant. My prior post enumerates reasons to avoid both browsers based on the DFSG (avoid DSM), and the guideline "Don't break Debian" (chromium EOL in wheezy). These are relevant factors in choosing chrome or chromium, as well as none of the above. If you think this is not relevant, your survey belongs in "Offtopic" or on some other forum.

cpoakes, there is nothing wrong with either of your posts. In fact, thank you for contributing them. Your posts provide very useful information that I'm looking for. Perhaps making a poll of this thread was not as useful as initially appeared to me. But those folks who have just made a post that the poll is flawed etc and give no information invites assumption. Your stating that you don't use either browser and explaining why was very helpful. the "problems" you have with each browser actually mirror my own. DRM aversion with Chrome and security update concerns with Chromium.

The idea of Chromium is open source. Build it from source and enjoy. I see no point comparing pre-built Chromium with Chrome. One can use Chrome binary plugins with Chromium, DRM and everything works - if you wish. Or you can compile Chromium without support for DRM plugin.

I agree the poll is flawed specifically because I pointed out valid considerations for choosing neither. "None of the above" simply says consider something else. And I think this holds true whether the poll is "chocolate or chocolate chip?" or "abortion or adoption?".

I also do not use either , as I all ready posted. I didn't know if the OP would be interested in my reasons, it seems like they did not want any other choices, nor discussion of other options.
But I certainly would not decide which browser I would use based on a "flawed poll", if it were me, but it isn't,... I would do some research, and look at the technical aspects, and also how the browser performs on MY system,...and
that is why I do not use either one. "Google Chrome" is not in the Debian repos,
to start with,..see the "Don't break Debian",link,.....and "chromium", the last time
I used it, 2015, also "broke" my system, not only did the browser crash, but it had a tendency to take the entire system with it,...a browser should not be tied into a
system in that way,...I use my computer more "off-line" then on-line, in other words, if the browser crashes, no big deal, I still have plenty of things to do , off line, and don't really need the browser, ...but if the browser crashes the entire system,...I can not do anything, until I repair the damage done by a "flawed" browser,...No thanks, I do not need either one. Even if 100s of others use
them, I still wouldn't.
If we decided what browsers, and what OS we use simply based on what everybody else uses, or the "most popular",and "flawed polls"..We would all still be using Windows,....

Normally, yes. But according to the wheezy chromium end-of-life announcement, this became impractical because the chromium/chrome version increment changed to an entirely new build environment unsupported on wheezy. As a software developer, I can understand Google's reasoning to move forward and not support both the old and new build environments simultaneously (it's expensive). And chromium had no choice but to follow. Debian stable may have been abandoned for a (legitimate) business reason but we were still abandoned. As it could happen at the next toolchain change, I don't want to set myself up for that hassle again.

Perhaps this title would have been clearer: Those of you who choose to use Chromium or Google Chrome, do you use Chromium or Google Chrome? If you use some other browser, you do not use Chromium or Google Chrome. But if you have experience using Chromium or Google Chrome and prefer one over the other or have some other thing to share that relates to my explanation that started the thread, I welcome your post. The purpose of the poll is to not find out how many people do not use Chrome or Chromium, but to learn (of the people that use Chrome or Chromium) which is used more.

Does it make sense now why there is no None Of The Above?

With an N of 14...

(Poll is even more flawed than previously suspected.)
