RTL8723BE & Deb8

#1 Post by wifiProblem »

wifi signal is ridiculously weak even when sat next to wireless hub. It's also very intermittent. I'm running Debian Jessie.
The machine is a HP Pavilion 15-ak085na.

I have tried installing the updated driver found HERE, using the guide HERE and my system wouldn't boot up, ctrl+alt+f1 seemed to show a few lines of code being executed repeatedly. I booted a root shell (is it called rescue mode?) and executed make uninstall which allowed me to boot gui mode again. Phew!

I've also gleaned as much info from THIS TOPIC as possible with no luck :(

I executed

Code: Select all

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://github.com/UbuntuForums/wireless-info/raw/master/wireless-info && \
chmod +x wireless-info && \
./wireless-info
Here is the wireless-info.txt output:

Code: Select all

*edit* to the best of my knowledge the wifi adapter in Realtek rtl8723be */edit*

////////// UPDATE //////////
I had already turned off IPS, but wifi-info.txt shows it has been reactivated whilst i was messing around with the driver...

I exe'd $sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf <<< "options rtl8723be ips=N fwlps=N"

Now:
:~$ grep -R [[:graph:]] /sys/module/rtl8723be/parameters
/sys/module/rtl8723be/parameters/ips:N
/sys/module/rtl8723be/parameters/msi:N
/sys/module/rtl8723be/parameters/debug:0
/sys/module/rtl8723be/parameters/fwlps:N
/sys/module/rtl8723be/parameters/swenc:N
/sys/module/rtl8723be/parameters/swlps:N

I also had issue with that driver and as far as I can remeber, the issue is fixed in a newer version and for Debian 8 the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf is enough:

Code: Select all

options rtl8723be swenc=1 fwlps=0 ips=0
No software update was required. It was just a default setting issue.
Have a nice day!

Thank you for your advice, I have made the changes exactly as you specified but wifi on this machine is still unusable. :(

I am running the latest 'current' iso of debian with the non-free-firmware (unless a newer dist has been issued in the last 3-weeks.)

also have just run ~$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

This seems to be a problem for many users, hopefully this will help.

Thank you so much for getting back to me :)

Unfortunately every time I try to install a new driver for the Wi-Fi I get the same problem:

I installed this driver using the following commands but can no longer start Debian in gui mode. Ctrl, alt and F1 shows what appears to be the same segment of code running repeatedly without ending.

change directory to rtlwifi_new
git pull
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe -rv rtl8723be
sudo modprobe -v rtl8723be

Please see the following YouTube video, which depicts the issue/code running repeatedly: https://youtu.be/oVCPxK8Ii9E

Thanks

I have a friend with this chipset and although he never had this kind of issue I had to change some settings to get it configured properly. He was suffering from occasional signal drops so I issued the command below and it stabilised the connection. It just sets a couple of options and if you try it and then want to remove it simply delete the file /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf ( or remove the added info if you already have this file)

Code: Select all

echo "options rtl8723be fwlps=N ips=N" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf
This was after installing the firmware-realtek package.
I can see that the problem is different for you but it might be worth a try.

Thank you for your response. :)

I have firmware-realtek installed and the contents of rtl8723be.conf is currently "options rtl8723be swenc=1 fwlps=0 ips=0"

Currently I am having to use my Pi's USB wifi adapter which is pretty crazy. The internal wifi doesn't work on my install disk (Jessie + non-free) in live mode, either. :(

Apologies for this bump. Does anybody have any idea what I am doing wrong?

have you tried a live-cd from a distro that ships non-free firmware? I would try Ubuntu/Q4OS/Mint and see if the live cd works properly and then while in the live session check what modules are loaded and versions to see if there are any clues...

Your current driver uses "N" instead of "0" to set that parameter to off in the conf file. However, it might be better to upgrade the kernel from jessie-backports instead, to get the newer driver inside it, which will use your existing conf file instead. It could depend on your graphics hardware as to what would be best.

Hi,
My wifi skills have gone way too rusty, but couldn't resist my curiosity, so....

In the wifi report in your first post, these three caught my attention -
ips: Y
ant_sel=2 parameter in your /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf file, and
existence of 'broadcom-sta-dkms.conf file

If you ran the 'tee /etm/modprobe.d....' command after generating the above report, it must have overwritten the conf file with the parameters we want. But I'm still curious about confirming the current status. Can you please generate that wireless-info report again and post it so we can see the current status?

The ant_sel=2 parameter raises some doubts in my mind. Which driver were/are you using? Which source? That parameter is not available for the default driver as far as I know (I'm not running any of the recent kernels to verify that, so I may be wrong).

The broadcom-sta-dkms.conf file gets generated if one tries to install the broadcom-sta-dkms driver. Since you don't seem to have any broadcom card in your computer, it indicates possibility of you blindly following random suggestions from the internet. If so, it might cause more errors than we may care to fix. Better start afresh.

Besides these, the existence of open-vm-tools... is also a little confusing to me, so please help me - You are not running this setup in a VM (virtual machine), are you?

And above all (even though I'm writing this at the bottom), as stevepusser recommended, you should trying upgrading the kernel to get newer driver. While we may try a few other things, I recall from somewhere that the 'weak signal' issue in some realtek drivers was a bug in some version, which was fixed in later versions.
