Why are you staying with Debian 6 Squeeze?
Squeeze had benefited from Long Term Support (LTS) until the end of February 2016.
Debian 6.0 has been superseded by Debian 7.0 (wheezy).

Well--you are using Stretch, that's obvious--but why is "scratch" prominent in the thread title, then?

I think arochester confused gcc-6.3 with Debian 6.3 Squeeze in your output...

By the way, "apt show <package>" will only show what's available to your system in the repo. It does not mean you have nvdia-driver installed, or if installed, you managed to build the kernel modules successfully. We can get a better idea of your current graphics driver situation quickly if you install inxi and post the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -G

I apologize.
Simply too much time with DJ stuff with the 80s recently, plus me being unfortunately "me". Sorry.

Code: Select all

System: Host: deb01 Kernel: 4.9.0-1-amd64 x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: MATE 1.16.1
           Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch)

And yet you cop a friggin' boatload of attitude when someone is unable to translate your mangled word salad... (Are you on drugs? Or is this a congenital thing?)

Gawd but this place has become abysmal. Vacations no longer help.
