Installation Failure: tmp is full

#1 Post by saraphim »

Hello,

Installation of Android SDK is failing due to tmp being full. I'm perplexed. This is a fresh Debian install that is one day old. I'm using encrypted lvm partitions for var, tmp and usr, yet I can't imagine that is relevant to this issue. I've only added one repo that I needed for wifi. How and why is this occurring? Thanks.

Re: Installation Failure: tmp is full

#2 Post by GarryRicketson »

No code boxes, so I am not even going to try to read all of that.
But it is pretty obvious, the problem is you do not have enough space on the
device, and the /tmp directory is not big enough.
Did you do any research or searches on this ?
Seems to be a rather common problem,...just glancing at the results,
was enough to convince me to not try installing this kind of junk,...I am surprised
they actually have it in the Debian repos,..
But any way, ,...
On Debian Android SDK is failing due to tmp being full
In some of the results, there is a bug report on it, but no real solution,..

===
Android SDK in Debian repositories

In this : https://wiki.debian.org/AndroidTools
It says:
The binaries for the Android SDK downloadable from Google are not completely free software but the source code is free software so Debian is packaging it. The full SDK cannot be completely installed from Debian packages yet. Until it is fully available, you can install either Sylvain Beucler's libre Android rebuilds or Google's non-free i386-only builds.
=====
Further down it says:
Google builds the Android OS and SDK as one giant thing, something like 10 gigs of source code. But the code is broken up into many different git----snip---
Basically I get the same results , with this, but there are some tutorials that might be use full :
How to install android-sdk on Debian
by saraphim » How and why is this occurring?
In a nut shell, and I am sorry if this sounds cruel or rude, but it is
occurring because you did not read enough documentation , before starting
to try to install this "thing". If you had , you would have known to make sure
the device, HD, and /tmp directory , etc. have enough space to handle it,...
Also, you do not mention which version of Debian, only that it is a fresh install,
Nor the size of your /tmp dir,..
Those things are relevant.
I'm using encrypted lvm partitions for var, tmp and usr, yet I can't imagine that is relevant to this issue
I don't know much about lvm partitions, I don't think it matters much,..but
from what I have read, with a lvm partitions it is easier to resize, and move things around, which is what you need to do to make the /tmp bigger.

Code: Select all

I'm using Debian 8 Jesse. The default Jessie installation made the tmp folder 360 mb. This "thing" Android Studio, is the official integrated development environment for the Android platform. I don't like it either, however a portion of it, the SDK, is required for flashing CopperheadOS onto a Android device, which is what I'm doing. I read ALL of the installation documentation, however I did not search the internet for possible problems with Debian. I would presume that this issue I am having is not limited to Android Studio and will occur again with future software installations. What size should the tmp folder be? Thank you for taking the time to assist.

Yes, that is really funny,
But, I think the OP is totally missing the point in using
code boxes, for any code, and output posted,..
Text is seperated, or if it is a quote, in quote boxes.

Example:
by saraphim » What size should the tmp folder be?
And it is hard to believe anything, now,...
by saraphim »I read ALL of the installation documentation,

If the OP had really read all the installation documentation, they would have read
what was all ready pointed out,..it is over 10gb, however based on the bug report,
just making the /tmp bigger does not seem to solve the problems.
by saraphim » I would presume that this issue I am having is not limited to Android Studio and will occur again with future software installations.
It would depend on the software, especially when it is junk that is not in the Debian
repositories, most ,if not all of the packages in the Debian repositories installand work just fine.
https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian/
I also noticed in the bug report for the android-sdk , the problems are not limited to with just Debian,
Again, if the OP had read ALL of the documentation, like they claim, or even just
some of it,...like me, I have only just glanced at some of it,...but if they had read it,
they would have noticed, :
https://wiki.debian.org/AndroidTools:The full SDK cannot be completely installed from Debian packages yet.
In this case they tell us, upfront, it cannot completely be installed just with the Debian packages,...
In any event, to resize the /tmp , and that is what needs to be done , to start with,..(I think)
How to resize the /tmp on a lvm partition on a Debian system
Many hits,...
https://wiki.debian.org/LVM
===
To be honest this is some what above my head,...but I have taken interest because my kid is a big "Android" fan, and I think he might enjoy this "android-sdk", if I can figure out how to install it,... but any way, that is another topic,...
==============
Found this, it may help:
http://serverfault.com/questions/65856/ ... -partition
It may be easier to replace /tmp with a plain file.

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/zero of=/var/mytmp bs=1024 count=<desired size in K>

mkfs -t ext3 /var/mytmp

umount /tmp

mount -o loop /var/mytmp /tmp
Then, create a matching mount line in your /etc/fstab file.
Since this is a fresh install,..and
by saraphim »The default Jessie installation made the tmp folder 360 mb.
I think it might be easiest to install again, (yes, just start over),...don't use the
"default" partitioning,..use the advanced partitioning , it will allow you to setup the
partitions with sizes according to your needs,... you may need to read a ton of other documentation, or ask for some guidance on that, depending,...there also are many good tutorials on partitioning, a search will find them.
For me, now I have learned something about this, so when I install to a VM, I know to make the /tmp huge,...maybe 30gb, just to be safe,...I am glad I found out about this
ahead of time,..
note: don't just wait, and hope I figure out how to install it (android-sdk),..I have to many projects, and it could be months before I actually get a VM setup for this, and if possible have it working,...but any way , it is a interesting project to me.

Garry, don't take this the wrong way, but I have to say this: just because you haven't heard of a piece of software or it's not in the Debian repositories does not automatically make it junk--at least we need some evidence of that before we start throwing around terms like that. The Pale Moon browser is not in Debian, (though I think a rebranded--à la Iceweasel--version could be without any objections from its developers) but that does not make it a junk browser.

I'm also interested in how the OP installed Debian and how much space they gave for Debian to live in to start with.

I find myself in agreement...

A 3-page (single-spaced) rant that only tangentially addresses the OP's actual problem isn't particularly helpful. Adding "this is junk, this is malware, try some searches" doesn't make it any better. (And suggesting 30GB for /tmp is just nonsense.)

@Garry, as I've suggested to you before: when you don't know the answer, maybe just leave the question alone.

by stevepusser »Garry, don't take this the wrong way
No problem,...it may be partly that people take it wrong when I say "junk".
I do not necessarily mean it in a negative way,..For example , I have a whole yard
full of junk, but I never throw any of it away, sometimes I find things that are use full
in the junk.
As for malware, well if I feel it is mal ware, I will say so, but nobody has to agree.
by stevepusser »The Pale Moon browser is not in Debian, (though I think a rebranded--à la Iceweasel--version could be without any objections from its developers) but that does not make it a junk browser.
But, I am not sure what this has to do with the problem the OP is having,
are they using "Pale moon browser" ? I must have missed that.

But any way, I will try to do better in the future.

On the 30 gb, for the /tmp, maybe that is over kill,.. but I like to make sure I have plenty of room for all my junk, in case I need it,
My /tmp has 289 gb available :

Code: Select all

/tmp$ df -h /tmp
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/disk/by-uuid/------------------------ 619G 298G 289G 51% /

As far as the nosense goes, a lttle humor
never hurts any body,...IE: using code boxes for text.
So any way, my apology for the use less answers, but one thing is clear, :

Code: Select all

/dev/mapper/debby--vg-tmp 360M 337M 149K 100% /tmp
360 M is not enough space, and

Code: Select all

No space left on device
That is what the error messages say.
Agreed, this would be help full, I would be interested in seeing that also :
by stevepusser » I'm also interested in how the OP installed Debian and how much space they gave for Debian to live in to start with.
When I have several VMs running at the same time, the space available on my
/tmp drops significantly. It can reach a point where there is not enough space to
be running another one.
But never mind, every thing I am saying is of no use , I guess...sorry.

@saraphim, i am having difficulties reading some of the outbursts here so i hope i'm not repeating things already said, but the problem is very simple:
you need more temporary storage space to build this monster.
usually it's enough to create a folder on a partition that has enough free space (it said 10GB somewhere, but i'd go double) and tell the program creating the package to use that, instead of /tmp.

worst case scenario, you have to a) UNmount /tmp, b) temporarily symlink that folder to /tmp (check permissions first).
but, i'm like 90% sure that the first solution will work.

The interesting part here is that debian istaller made /tmp -partition, that is only 360M !! (with default settings??)
If that is true, then there is a bug in debian installer

/tmp needs to be much bigger than that. Many programs need more space in /tmp.
Eg. many DVD rippers copy the DVD to tmp, and then convert it to some other format. That would require >4,7GB
(ofcourse you can force them to use some other folder than tmp, but why would you have to?)

You dont even need to have /tmp on its own partition.

No, you did. The installer has no way of knowing how you are going to use your system and by choosing the option with separate partitions you are taking responsibility for ensuring they are set appropriately (the "everything in one partition if you don't know" option might have been a better bet).
I would presume that this issue I am having is not limited to Android Studio and will occur again with future software installations.
Depends on what you will be using your /tmp for.
What size should the tmp folder be?
As big as you require for your needs.

Presumably you chose lvm for it's flexibility, you could resize the tmp volume to suit.
Or just mount something bigger on it temporarily.

For a 'home' or desktop system, yes - but the 'separate partitions for everything' really doesn't make much sense in that scenario anyway, it's more commonly employed in specialised server setups and requires planning and knowlege of the expected operating parameters.

PEBCAK is not a bug.

Btw, I disagree that there is not an installation issue worth attention. It's illogical to default tmp so small. If this LVM configuration I'm using requires manual size configuration(s) as to avoid a tiny tmp or other folder, this should he mentioned during setup if not part of the setup process. The setup flow goes in one of two main directions from the start; manual partitioning or default (automatic setup). I could have manually partitioned had I known I had to, yet I let Debian do this assuming it would as I was using the default auto setup option.

FWIW I still disagree with your disagreement :)

300MB for tmp is usually more than enough and, I think, is an acceptable default for a separate partition setup - having a default size of (for example) 4+ GB for a partition that in most cases will hold < 100MB of data would, IMHO, be a bug ...

As well as the prompt in the partitioning step to choose "all in one" if you're unsure, it's also covered in the install documentation (which you read, right? :) )

https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/ ... -partition
https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/apcs02.html.en wrote: /tmp: temporary data created by programs will most likely go in this directory. 40–100MB should usually be enough. Some applications — including archive manipulators, CD/DVD authoring tools, and multimedia software — may use /tmp to temporarily store image files. If you plan to use such applications, you should adjust the space available in /tmp accordingly
Debian provides a lot more than your average "cool desktop focussed derivative distro" aimed at casual users, and consequently requires a bit more thought about what you want.
