Both VLC and native player not working

#1 Post by Kraken2 »

Hey guys!

I have troubles running both VLC and debian native video player. When I play a video with VLC, it goes black and white... It can be any videos. It always plays in black and white. And when I play a video on native video player it plays in forward mode... I mean wtf lol ? I don't know what I did; I have this problem since one year but usually not play videos so I didn't bother with it before. But now it's starting to piss me off so much :D

I tried to uninstall VLC and install it again but nothing changes..;

Thank you for your help

wtf lol, there's some important info missing from your post:

- does it happen with all videos? try different videos, see if a pattern emerges. are those webrips, dvds, youtube videos ... ?

- try one of the command line players, e.g. mplayer. it should spit out some output that should help us understand.

Hey :) Thanks for your answer;

It happens with absolutely every type of videos : vids downloaded from youtube, movies downloaded by torrent, .avi, .mpeg, .mp4, ... it's just insane..

VLC always plays the video in B&W and Totem plays it in colour but in forward mode.

I just installed mplayer and this is what I get when I play a video from a command line.

Code: Select all

debiandab@debianmachine:~$ mplayer '/home/debiandab/Bureau/TEST/Motivational short video - How to succeed - cartoon.mp4'

           ************************************************

Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
  - Try -ao sdl or use the OSS emulation of ALSA.
  - Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
- Slow video output
  - Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
  - Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the lavdopts,
    e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all.
- Broken file
  - Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
  - Try -cache 8192.
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
  - Try -nocache.
Read DOCS/HTML/en/video.html for tuning/speedup tips.
If none of this helps you, read DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html.

I'm using a VM on virtual box to run Debian on my mac. Is there any settings I should change in virtual box preferences or in debian itself to make it works ?

You should install VirtualBox add-ons.

That was critical missing information. Think about it--you have a video issue. VB abstracts the video to virtual hardware. Could the two possibly be related?

The answer is yes. XD

Yes, couldn't agree more. Asking for assistance with video and not mentioning what [virtual?] video hardware is in use.

BTW, there is no such thing as "native debian player" either. Debian (Linux) has no GUI, one can play video on console using svgalib, but I'm not aware of any Linux that chips with default console video player.

Thank you so much guys :) That's why I posted it in the beginner forum ^^ If there was a newbie forum i would have posted it in it.

When I talk about the native player I mean "Totem" which I think is already installed with Debian.

I don"t have any problems running vids on this now, but VLC is still playing in B&W...

Any ideas to make it work ? I tried to uninstall it and install it again but nothing has changed.

Thank you again ^^

Totem is not installed with Debian, I think it may come with Gnome.

Does it mean you installed VBox add-ons or did you use some other voodoo? We are not there watching over your shoulder. Regarding VLC, what video output it is configured to use?

I updated virtual box and I installed what they called an "extension pack". Is it what you are talking about?

In VLC preferences, overlay is ticked and the output is the "standard" one.. I haven't changed anything. Which one should I use?

We are talking about the "guest additions", which are a set of drivers for the guest which have to be compiled from source in the guest. Debian's own repository versions of the guest additions can make things simpler, but I'm going to go with the most general case here. The guest additions add accelerated video, a desktop that resizes with the window, and share folders, for instance.

1. Insert the virtual guest additions ISO into the guest, using the VB Devices menu.

2. Make sure you have all you need in Debian to build drivers. The easy way is to install module-assistant,
then in a terminal as root or with sudo, run

Code: Select all

m-a prepare
3. Navigate to the /media folder. Hopefully, the ISO will be mounted there, and you can enter its folder.

4. Once in the ISO's folder, open a terminal there, and as root or with sudo, run

Code: Select all

    sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
The .run file can also be copied to somewhere in your users home folder and the same terminal command run
on it there as root or with sudo. Either way, watch the output for any errors.

5. Reboot the guest, now the magic resizing desktop should be working after you get to a desktop. Depending on
how you set up your virtual machine's video acceleration and the host's video driver, you may have a
better video output available now in VLC and other players; look for something to do with GL.
