mate failure about only one user
mate failure about only one user
Hello, the desktop "Mate" don't open correctly any more for my principal user.
This user can launch XFCE, but Mate is much more comfortable when it works!
Can you help me to found and repair the bad file in his home, to retrieve a smooth mate launching again.
Tower PC working with Debian8 Jessie.
Thank you from Paris.

Re: mate failure about only one user
thanks for telling us that you are using a tower pc in paris.
but we need lots of much more pertinent information to even attempt to give you some advice:
- how does it fail? exact commands, full output (log files) etc.
- how did you install mate?
- is your system up to date
and many more.

Re: mate failure about only one user
LightDM greeter let me choose between Xfce or Mate, and for my personnal user no problem withe Xfce, but with Mate i get an useless screen. and no such problem for other users.
Re: mate failure about only one user
How did i install Mate?
I used a Debian Jessie netinstall CD and i chosen "mate".
That was working perfectly days after days until this failure: all of a sudden when asked for "mate" and my user name the greeter tries to work, but i get a bad screen. No such logging problem for other user names.
Some people told me that i have to found a bad file in my home personal directory, but which one?

Re: mate failure about only one user
so mate was pre-installed, and you installed xfce later?
and for a while both have been working?
what happened just before it stopped working?
please, when seeing this bad screen, do the following:
enter ctrl-alt-F2
log in
enterand post the content of the file fdn.log.errors

if that is all, then there were no errors in the log.jet02 wrote:content of the file fdn.log.errors:

you can try creating a new user, and logging into mate with that.
if that works, it means that some MATE-specific configuration in your OLD user's home is borked.

exactly that!debiman wrote: you can try creating a new user, and logging into mate with that.

This was solved by: installing Stretch Debian 9.0, with my old home and then .... no more problem...but no explanation!
