Using Google Chrome unstable (latest) and Firefox 52.0.2 on Stretch with MATE.
Fonts have always looked better in Firefox than in Chrome, no matter the version I have used.
What is needed to force Chrome to look better.
I'm not talking about the UI fonts, as Chrome does not seem to use GTK3 yet. I can control the UI with styles in my themes.
I'm talking about how ugly the fonts look on rendered Web pages.
Here's a comparison. Firefox looks great to me but Chrome looks horrible.

Thanks, I know about that.
Changing font settings only affects Web pages where the font is not set in the html or css code. It won't change how text is rendered on the page by the browser.

You will need to put a fontconfig file in your home directory. Change settings to your taste.

Oddly enough I had the same issue with Firefox 52 and fixed it the same way.
