Re: user interface
It could have several reasons. How old is your machine? The regular Debian 8 release lacks support for many machine released in 2015 or later.

Re: user interface
What image did you use ? The other day I installed Debian 8 using a netinstall image, for a minimal install, I did not install any DE or "graphical user interface" as you call it, Did you install one ?
You can install xorg , and a WM or a DE, if you didn't ,...there really are not enough details to say why you don't have a "graphical user interface".

Re: user interface
Log in and run these commands as root:
Then select the MATE desktop and reboot when it's finished.
Code: Select all
apt-get install tasksel
tasksel
deadbang

there's quite a difference and you should know which one you installed.
which .iso did you use (link please) and how did you create the bootable usb?
also, during installation, there's many choices to make. which choices did you make?
did you choose to install a graphical desktop?
Re: user interface
Isn't that enabled on all installers (that include a DE)? In which case, the OP either deselected it or, installed from a source that doesn't include a DE.debiman wrote:did you choose to install a graphical desktop?

Re: user interface
Could be a live-boot you're running. If so at the Login prompt use userid 'user' and password 'live' and once logged in run 'startx' if it doesn't take you directly into X (gui desktop).

Re: user interface
It seems likely to have something to do with the graphics hardware and driver, so it would be very helpful if you'd let us know what you have...please?

Re: user interface
If that were true Steve, wouldn't they have a blank screen with a flashing cursor? The OP has a login prompt.

i did not get the MATE desktop option
so i decide use the dvd iso image instead of using the cd iso image
the dvd iso image give me more option and the OS start as i am expecting

i create the bootable usb from ubuntu OS using startup Disk creator
i solved this by using the dvd iso instead of using the cd iso after trying the solution from Head_on_a_Stick in this thread
