Could you please help us out a bit and let us know what's in your particular machine? There are several free Windows utilities that will generate a good hardware report--Windows even comes with one, I believe.

Unhelpful: 802.11ac wi-fi connectivity!

Helpful: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter

When I purchased laptop it had preinstalled Ubuntu 12 or 14. I have 16.04 now. But it seem that with updates problems come. Current problem in Ubuntu - it freezes on shutdown. In 14.04 I had disappearing cursor after suspend. 16.10 and 17.04 I can't establish DSL connection, there even no pppoeconfig in 17.04. (I tried to solve those problems). Once I tried some version of Debian on this laptop (don't remember what exactly) and desktop couldn't be loaded. So may be I should give a shot to Debian now ?

I don't have the same model but I have a 3552 and I use Stretch as it is less work to get everything working, but as it is a "testing" version it might not be suitable for you, but as you have used linux (Ubuntu) for a while now I would imagine you have a basic grasp on the Linux basics so it could be ok. Jessie will work but requires a little work installing graphics/kernel/wifi and maybe other things too, from backports.
To sum that up You can use either Jessie or Stretch but I would suggest reading some posts on this forum (search inspiron) to see what issues others have had and it might give you some better guidance.

While stevepusser is researching your system, you could try a Live Debian image and report back any issues.

Debian jessie will work just fine with Haswell hardware but stretch will work better :)

In Debian 8.8.0 I can't establish DSL connection (via GUI and terminal), there is no pppoeconf.

Newer packages.

The graphics stack in particular is much improved for stretch, not to mention rootless X (with GDM & `startx`) and all binaries compiled as PIE

After installation of pppoeconf I was able to connect to internet through konsole, but would be nice to see solution for NetworkManager.
Another problem - Debian freezes on shutdown.
I tried sudo swapoff -a && systemctl poweroff - didn't help.
About pros of Stretch: I don't very understand information in previous post and would like to understand how it can affect average user ?

I think that the gnome-ppp package can be what you're looking for.

Is it for Gnome 2 ? I actually prefer KDE or XFCE.
To clarify: I want to establish DSL pppoe connection though default network manager (through network manager item on the panel: Edit Connections > Add > DSL...), but it tells something about PPP.

Gnome-ppp is going to be about the best you get with xfce; I help develop the Debian-based MX Linux xfce distro, and that's what we shipped with it after much discussion. I think KDE may have a similar tool, but I'm not sure what it is...might have to use the Google.

Thanks. Does anyone know how to deal with freezing ? Ubuntu 16.04 has the same problem by the way.

This Ubuntu thread for the same problem: https://askubuntu.com/questions/766450/ ... utting-off

says that updating the BIOS solved the issue. Installing inxi and running

Code: Select all

inxi -M
can tell you what version you have now.

I have A12, those guy updated to A11. Actually it's not so important to me now, I'm on Stretch now, thought would be nice to see solution because may be useful for Ubuntu.
