[solved] Transfer ipad files to debian

#1 Post by oldboy »

I tried searching for solution, but none worked. So, hope someone here can help.
On debian desktop, I am running stretch. These are installed:

Code: Select all

libimobiledevice-dev 1.2
libimobiledevice-utils 1.2
libimobiledevice6
libplist-dev 1.12
libplist3 1.12
ifuse 1.1.2
gvfs 1.30.4-1
When I connect ipad (lightning to usb) to debian, the ipad icon shows on my desktop (gnome). 2 items show on /home/documents
1. Documents on ipad
2. iPad (as a camera)
when I click on iPad, it says folder is empty
when I click on Documents on ipad

Code: Select all

Unable to access "Documents on ipad"
Unhandles lockdown error (-3)
This is the recommended solution when I google the web, but it does not work. I hope someone here has the know how and help. TIA

I dunno diddly about iphone, but Google suggests that you stopped searching prematurely. When I Google your error message, I get a ton of hits. Of course, can't vouch for any of the answers, since I don't have an iphone. But I notice that the very first one says you also need to have the ifuse package installed.

Lots more suggestions here: https://www.google.com/search?q=Unhandl ... error+(-3)

Yes, I forgot to say that I already have ifuse installed. Also gvsf 1.3.4 is installed.

I read the ibimobiledevice web page, the faq portion. It says to have gvfs>=1.5.1 is needed. I have gvfs=1.30.4-1 install. Is this newer than 1.5.1?
also as stated in the FAQ, ideviceinfo shows a lot of data on my ipad.
I did try the solutions in your link. It did show unpaired and then paired, but error is still there.

I may not have gone through 6000, but most of the one I tried have the same solution around using ibimobiledevice, which as I mentioned did not work. One of these says to just forget about linking idevices to linux, which I may have to do, and go back to use windows10.

Your post title says file (singular).

While you search for a solution, if the file is small enough, just email it to yourself. Easier and less melodramatic than Windows 10.

No it's not, but that probably means you need the gvfs >= 1.5.1 if you are to compile the latest version of libimobiledevice manually. Since you are using the debian package it's irrelevant.

But, it seems that with iOS >= 10.3 you do need gvfs >= 1.5.1. My ipad was stolen sometimes earlier so I cannot confirm.

Have you tried using it?

@dasein, I am sorry to have misled you. I want to transfer files and photo files, in particular. I can connect using samba server via wifi, but it is very slow.

@orythem27, i do not know what ifuse is for. But I did do the unpair and repair commands. Are the commands from infuse?
I am running stretch, and it only comes with gvfs 1.30.4. I search Debian packages in testing and Sid, and both listed 1.30.4, so it must be >1.5.1.

Just to be sure, many mobile phones don't allow file transfer over USB unless the phone has been logged into/unlocked, or you have set an option to allow access in some settings of the phone OS.

ifuse is a command line tool which can be used to mount iOS storage manually. By using ifuse, you can rule out any potential problem with gvfs.
For detailed usage, see https://github.com/libimobiledevice/ifuse

@pylkko, I have reset my ipad with no lock code
@orythem27
I tried this command

Code: Select all

root@debian:/home/shum# idevicepair unpair && idevicepair pair
SUCCESS: Unpaired with device 974f56381a9dbbc8237c7c5dbf105460b36e1fc6
SUCCESS: Paired with device 974f56381a9dbbc8237c7c5dbf105460b36e1fc6
It looks like my ipad is mounted
But if I use ifuse command

Code: Select all

root@debian:/home/shum# ifuse /mount/iPad
ERROR: the mount point specified does not exist
Although my ipad is mounted, the same errors there as shown in my first post. The command idevicepair and unpair supposedly would fix the lockdown error, but it does not.

Just an update.
I connected my old ipad3. The iPad folder contains the DCIM folder and all the photos in old ipad3
Connected my new iPad Pro, the iPad folder is still empty. Sometimes the iPad folder is not visible although the idevicepair says the iPad Pro is paired.
Back to ipad3. The second folder- document on iPad is still locked down.
But if I use ifuse command

Code: Select all

root@debian:/home/shum# ifuse /mount/iPad
ERROR: the mount point specified does not exist
So does the mount point /mount/iPad actually exist? This command will attempt to mount /var/root/Media/ on your iOS device at local mount point /mount/iPad

I don't know where the mount point is.

Code: Select all

root@debian:/home/shum# lsusb
Bus 007 Device 002: ID 05ac:12ab Apple, Inc. iPad 4/Mini1
Please tell me where to look.

You've specified it: /mount/iPad
That is to say ,to use the command `ifuse /mount/iPad`, you have to create /mount/iPad first.
Or, use an existing directory. For example, create a directory 'mnt' in your home directory (which would be /home/shum/mnt ) and use it as the mount point for the ifuse command.

Thanks.

Code: Select all

root@debian:/home/shum# mkdir ./mnt
root@debian:/home/shum# ifuse /mnt/ipad
ERROR: the mount point specified does not exist
root@debian:/home/shum# ifuse ./mnt/ipad

root@debian:/home/shum# cd ./mnt
root@debian:/home/shum/mnt# ifuse /mnt/iPad
ERROR: the mount point specified does not exist

oldboy wrote:Thanks. root@debian:/home/shum# mkdir ./mnt
With this command you've created a directory /home/shum/mnt
Then you can mount the "Media" storage of your iPad with

Code: Select all

ifuse /home/shum/mnt
And you don't need to be root to use ifuse. Also you might consider deleting /home/shum/mnt and create it again under your own normal user.

Thanks for your patience. I am not very good with Linux.
Here is what I have done. I chmod 777 to /mnt

Code: Select all

root@debian:/home/shum# ifuse /home/shum/mnt -nonempty
There was an error accessing the mount point: Input/output error

OK. I finally got it. I cannot read the files or photos directly, I have to copy over to another directory in /home.

Thanks for your help and patience.
