That is correct. Is this not mentioned in the "Help" for Synaptic?

Garry, given his obstinate refusal across multiple threads to provide diagnostic information or implement any suggestions, why do you continue to feed this troll?

Ahhh--yes, you know Google stopped providing 32-bit Google Chrome years ago? This is getting suspicious.

I am thinking it might be best if the OP tries to find someone locally in his/here
area, and have a qualified technician re-install Debian, or the distro of choice,...
Even though they were a IT expert, that is "was", and it seems like now they
are going to need "professional" or "voluntary" help.
Ok here we offer "voluntary" help, but this seems to be a case were it needs to be "hands on" or in person, in other words a real tech, in person, it does not take a hour to do the install, when it is someone that knows how.
I am finding with my eyes deteriorating, there are many things I used to be able to do
well, and with out any bodies help, but sadly that is changing, and also it is another topic,.
I do not have all the benefits, and kinds of help that "vets" have, but the OP should be
able to find a repair shop in their area, yellow pages, or google.
I suppose I feel sorry for him/her,.. I am sure this is frustrating.

Re: Any way to verify your patch 'level'?
Yes, I imagined you did. But I think it would be more help to the OP to suggest he just reinstalls and not follows up his obsession with updating sources. He is oblivious to the 90% telling him to reinstall and just listens to the minority who assist him with updating sources, which is fruitless and ultimately no help to his situation.GarryRicketson wrote:I suppose I feel sorry for him/her

Re: Any way to verify your patch 'level'?
I'm trying to get some help from local friends who might have a usb cd drive to reinstall with. Honestly, I was trying to get help with making this installation work, but I think ppl are misinterpreting my lack of progress or understanding of what ppl are saying as "troll"ing or something. The response is shameful and a classic example of how an ex-human services pro like me was able to make a career shift directly into it work in '98......really, ppl....I suppose I'll just get more sarcasm and be tagged as judgmental....

Re: Any way to verify your patch 'level'?
as to the issue of reinstalling....I've been digging into this netbook's bios trying to figure out how to enable 'usb' booting, but it's not readily apparent. Currently, I've asked a couple of neighbor friends to see if either has time and access to a usb cd drive to use in reinstalling linux on this thing. I'm still waiting for their replies, so, with any luck, I won't need to bug y'all any more with apparently dumb questions or further "trolling"

Re: Any way to verify your patch 'level'?
In many cases, you need to boot with the USB drive plugged in for it to show up as a boot option.

Re: Any way to verify your patch 'level'?
There is no "boot from USB" option as such. You have to enable the USB drive as the priority boot device when it is inserted.ayarrington73 wrote:as to the issue of reinstalling....I've been digging into this netbook's bios trying to figure out how to enable 'usb' booting, but it's not readily apparent. i would recommend you reinstall but with Linux Mint. For two reasons: you don't seem like you're ready for Debian, and secondly, the Mint forums are much more accommodating for hand-holding than the Debian ones, they will walk you through issues very happily there and at length, whereas the Debian forums expect you to have a sizeable working knowledge of Linux and know how to do your own research, with the Debian Wiki being the first port of call, not your thread.
I think you'll be much happier with that distro and community.
EDIT: Steve got there first. This is very basic stuff, OP.

Re: Any way to verify your patch 'level'?
understood......in my limited experiences with Linux so far, I was leaning toward Debian, as Mint didn't have scroll buttons in windows by default(crossed that bridge years ago), but maybe I'm not ready to use Debian until I've had more linux time.....I certainly didn't mean to offend or "troll" as it were...

Re: Any way to verify your patch 'level'?
Interesting idea....Previously, I had beein installing linux on a full laptop(w/internal cd), so that would make sense....In this case, I'm using a dumpy little netbook, so I don't have an internal cd and just plan on borrowing a friend's usb drive...stevepusser wrote:In many cases, you need to boot with the USB drive plugged in for it to show up as a boot option.
Good thought...hadn't thought of that

Re: Any way to verify your patch 'level'?
I would not recommend Linux Mint to my worst enemy,
that can "loan" you a usb optical drive.
If there are problems because of firmware and drivers, a good choice, that is more
"Debian based", and 1000 times more reliable then Linux Mint,
MX-16
Also one of our members here does a lot of work on this project and will
be able to help with any problems. They do also have a great forum as well.
I speak from experience about Linux Mint, that is a terrible distro, extremely
difficult to keep it working, I would not suggest it to my worst enemy.
You shouldn't have much problem installing Debian, especially if you have someonePost by ayarrington73 » 2017-07-17 14:34

Re: Any way to verify your patch 'level'?
I'm interested, can you explain a little? I used Mint for a little while and thought it was excellent for what it was - a solid, easy to understand, attractive newbie distro. I also know of a couple of very happy Mint users personally and there are many, many others. I'm not contradicting you, just interested in your reasoning.GarryRicketson wrote: I speak from experience about Linux Mint, that is a terrible distro, extremely

Would that y'all would quit feeding this troll. He's no different than a child who misbehaves to get attention.
Feed the troll = the troll persists
Starve the troll = the troll leaves
It's simple math.

Re: Any way to verify your patch 'level'?
@Lysander
It really would be another topic, but in a nutshell, every time there were updates/upgrades, they broke the system, I got tired of that.
Never once, starting with Debian 6, to Debian 7, did a update or up grade
cause problems,...however with Debian 8 - 9 things have changed on Debian
as well, but still it is reliable , when installed properly , etc.
The Linux Mint forum is fine, about the same as any other forum,...

Just "Add Foe" (far right tab in user CP) and his hostility will be hidden from your view (ignore list).ayarrington73 wrote:dasein wrote:with all due respect(note "due"), back the f off, man.....
Nobody would ever ask questions If everyone possessed encyclopedic knowledge of the man pages.
