Why can not I change the Debian Live ISO?

Why can not I replace filesystem.squashfs in the image? Why it is impossible to replace files on a USB flash drive after burning Live ISO? Why did they change everything for the worse?

What's the error you're encountering? What OS and tools are you using? How did you try to replace the file? You make it sound like it's something that used to work and now isn't, so a bit more details on that would be helpful too.

As far as I know, iso images are always read only. You need another type of file, like a img to write an image to a stick do that it can be altered after. This is if you use a byte-to-byte writer like dd. You can, of course, also make a file system and partitions on a USB stick and copy the contents from the iso to it. Then you will be able to use it as if any other drive. So without knowing what tools you used, it's hard to understand what you issue is

What are you talking about? On jessie I freely burned the image on the USB flash drive via dd on Linux and via UlltraISO on Windows. I could freely through UltraISO change the filesystem.squashfs in the image. On stretch this can no longer be done. The old file is not even deleted from the image and continues to occupy space. File names in the uppercase image. Which means that it's raw ISO. After burning stretch on the USB flash drive, the files become read-only. Nothing can be changed or replaced. Plus on the flash drive there is no free space, although the image is only 1.8 gb. This is a RAW image and most likely it is intended primarily for writing only to disk. Copy everything from the flash drive and assemble the working image is simply impossible. Why not do so as jessie, so on other distros? Why do they complicate the lives of users?

This:

I have never personnaly used UltraISO. However, according to Wikipedia, UltraISO is an iso editing program that can handle modifying iso-images.

Perhaps, then, you could use it now to make the disk that you currently desire. It is also possible to extract the contents to a folder and then once you have the content that you want, to rewrite the iso with mkisofs
