Debian mascot?
Debian mascot?
I've seen an old post regarding a mascot for Debian, was it forgotten? or Debian does not need a mascot? How about we try to revive that spirit of Universal OS into a tiny character?
I would exchange everything I know in exchange for half of what I don't.
Re: Debian mascot?
always thought it was this
although this for the women of Debian is priceless:

Re: Debian mascot?
I all ways thought the mascot would be the same character that the
version is named after.
version is named after.
Re: Debian mascot?
xD I saw this thing
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianArt/Mascot
Maybe I'll try to make one, tho it seems that it is abandoned.

Re: Debian mascot?
I've always taken the toy story characters to be Debian's mascots, the latest being an octopus.
DebianStable
Code: Select all
$ vrms
No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

Im sure that is quite the copyright violation....
Re: Debian mascot?
Aren't toy story code names characters already mascot itself?
Even I can't say will Debian ppl even like mascot os-tans for Debian like these samples either.

That Swirl is not a mascot it's a Debian logo. Mascot has to be a character that can represent the meaning.
That's being said Debian is the only OS that can't make Os-tans mascot for it.
Since Debian already have toy stories code name characters.
Building something random mascots which conflict against or aren't match to code name it's freaking awkward.
I used to planned to draw something from stretch like takaju did but gotta cancelled to avoid code name mascot conflictions.

Re: Debian mascot?
A penguin is too obvious and doesn't relate to Debian specifically. It should be something which represents what Debian represents.
Coincidentally, LIbre Office is having a mascot competition.
Taking that they've said into consideration, it would be something which represents the Debian Philosophy [Social Contract/DFSG].
So something that represents some of more of the following: freedom, flexibility, community, transparency, independence and stability. I'm sure there are plenty of animals that represent a couple of those or more.

Re: Debian mascot?
The catch phrase says its "the universal operating system".
Type that into google and it brings you straight to the logo and debian.org is first on the search engine list.
Now "universal" means:
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/universal
Thesaurus says: http://www.thesaurus.com/browse/universal?s=t
So with that, imo i believe it should be something related to universal, something to do with a universe, maybe a sun, quasar or nebula...Take a look at the logo, it looks like a portal.
But are we talking mascots in the animal kingdom here? Like football mascots or hockey, baseball etc?

Re: Debian mascot?
I suppose it could be anything but animals or plants are the most common. I like the universe idea a lot.
For instance, the Red Faced Spinetail builds strong nests and works with different species and communities, which is representative of Debian's stability and its communal aspect.
The universe idea is good. Interested to see what other people come up with.

How about a pretty girl?
OS: Debian 12.4 Bookworm / DE: Enlightenment

Re: Debian mascot?
I find these girl Linux pictures to be hilarious because they're so irrelevant. I like attractive girls as as much as the next man, but really, just pasting a Debian [or Ubuntu, Mint, Arch, Gentoo etc] logo on a girl is nonsensical. There is no correlation.
EDIT: though this is sort of funny.

Re: Debian mascot?
It would be nice with more clothes on, Skolelinux teachers won't like their students drooling towards the monitor. How about a pretty girl?

Another Idea I have is to use one of these guys used in those memes on the internet.
