I found this. If I am reading this correctly, is this the reason that many important packages are trying to be removed?

Yes. Wait for it to settle, sid is like that ie unstable.

So, this issue seems to have passed. I just waited and did apt-get update followed by dist-upgrade and it no longer wanted to remove xserver and other important changes.
