Why doesn't whois return domain contact info anymore?

Lately I notice that a whois from commandline only returns registrar and DNS server information, and no longer includes any of the domain contacts. Is it just me, or is it like that for everyone? I've read the man page and tried a few possible commandline options, but most of them tend to spit out RIPE error.

I guess it depends upon the database that gets queried as well as domain privacy features of some registrars.

Please use code boxes for all of these "who is outputs" (all those links make it look like spam) And it is hard to read the "code". I see the OP did edit the one with links to
another site, if the OP just used code boxes, this would not be a problem

The response returned by a "whois" query is registrar-specific, and always had been (at least as long as multiple registrars have existed).

I'm seeing the same behavior, so something definitely has changed. I confirmed it by checking a domain name that I have checked multiple times in the past.

If this is the case, I think it's just as well; whenever the change happened I don't know but I, for one, was getting spam sent to my domain mail servers addressed to me personally. Some domain providers, at a price, offer to shield personal contact details, but why should one have to pay to avoid spam?
