Where is /var/log/dmesg
Where is /var/log/dmesg
Hi, so there is no /var/log/dmesg file in my Debian Stretch and I was unable to see any information about where this file now is in the relase notes of Debian Stretch.
Do they mention that kind of changes in any documentation of Debian?

Re: Where is /var/log/dmesg
I don't see the file here on the two Debian 9 systems I checked. But dmesg does work.
Re: Where is /var/log/dmesg
Just to clarify MALsPa's point: the dmesg command is distinct from any particular file.
Re: Where is /var/log/dmesg
If I am not mistaken, this is because the contents are now to be found in journalctl.
Re: Where is /var/log/dmesg
Why don't they list those changes on the release notes? is it too minor of a change to mention?pylkko wrote:If I am not mistaken, this is because the contents are now to be found in journalctl.

Re: Where is /var/log/dmesg
Was it there when you used Jessie? Prolly not, since Jessie also runs systemd, which has journalctl.Jjueh3 wrote:Hi, so there is no /var/log/dmesg file in my Debian Stretch
About the question in the title, you should seriously ask Lennart and co.
Re: Where is /var/log/dmesg
I checked the release notes and you are right, it is not mentioned there. Maybe because it is so minor. You can, of course, pipe the output of or to a file if you need that. Even do it automatically with a service or script
Code: Select all
dmesg
Code: Select all
journalctl - k
Re: Where is /var/log/dmesg
Just to clarify, Debian Jessie still has dmesg in /var/logWheelerof4te wrote: Was it there when you used Jessie? Prolly not, since Jessie also runs systemd, which has journalctl.
